HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 76
BY REPRESENTATIVES ROBBY CARTER AND SIMON
A RESOLUTION
To commend the Jewel Sumner girls' basketball team upon winning the 2016 Louisiana
High School Athletic Association Class 3A state championship.
WHEREAS, on March 2, 2016, the Jewel Sumner girls' basketball team, the second
seed in the Allstate Sugar Bowl/Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) Top
28, fulfilled its pledge from one year ago to pay back a semifinal defeat at the hands of
University High with a 67-43 victory over the U-High Cubs; and
WHEREAS, Bre'ashlee Jones scored a game-high twenty-one points for the Sumner
Cowgirls, who sank a red-hot 63.6 percent of their shots in the first half while holding U-
High to only 16.1 percent shooting; and
WHEREAS, the semifinal win over the Cubs propelled the Sumner Cowgirls to the
LHSAA Top 28 Class 3A tournament final on March 5, 2016, in which Parkview Baptist fell
to state champion Jewel Sumner by a score of 60-50; and
WHEREAS, the high scorer for the Cowgirls in the championship game was
Diamond Brooks, who tossed in twenty-one points and added twelve rebounds; and
WHEREAS, the Jewel Sumner girls' basketball team finished the 2015-2016 season
with a perfect thirty-six wins against no losses and an 8-0 district record; and
WHEREAS, these athletes performed at the highest levels of excellence throughout
the season, and each Cowgirl deserves recognition for her vital contributions to the winning
effort; and
WHEREAS, seniors Baylie Bridges, Kayle Bryant, and Bre'ashlee Jones; juniors
Diamond Brooks, Amya Brumfield, Lana Fairburn, and Kiara Williams; sophomores Jayla
Hayes and Katherine Ingram; and freshmen Alacia Brown, Hailey Klein, and Ja'keria
Norman comported themselves magnificently in the title game; and

WHEREAS, head coach Kara Corkern has instilled an ethic of winning in these
young women athletes, and has demonstrated leadership and motivational skills that have
led to success both on and off the court for the Jewel Sumner Cowgirls; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize the well-deserved title the Cowgirls have
earned; to commend the team for the ability they have displayed, particularly at the most
difficult level of competition; and to express sincere and heartfelt congratulations to the team
members and coaching staff for the merits earned and the sportsmanship shown while
achieving the highest state girls' basketball honor possible for Jewel Sumner High School.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate the athletes and coaching
staff of the Jewel Sumner High School girls' basketball team for winning the 2016 Class 3A
state basketball championship, capping off a truly spectacular season; and does hereby
recognize the team's outstanding performance and the pride and honor they have brought to
their school and community.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to head coach Kara Corkern.
