SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 19

A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To express the sincere condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of John
Stephen Szanyi Sr.
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the citizens of Louisiana
learned of the death of John Stephen Szanyi Sr. on February 19, 2016, at the age of
seventy-nine, surrounded by his loving family; and
WHEREAS, John Stephen Szanyi Sr. was a native of Hungarian Settlement in
Albany, Louisiana, and a resident of Livingston; and
WHEREAS, he worked as chief of communications and public relations at the
Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Szanyi was a charter member and past president of the Kiwanis
Club of Livingston, and a lifetime member of the Hungarian Presbyterian Church; and
WHEREAS, he took great pride in his Hungarian heritage and community, and was
an ardent New Orleans Saints fan; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Szanyi loved his family deeply and always placed God first in his
life; and
WHEREAS, a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather, he will be truly
missed; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Szanyi is survived by his wife, Sharon Sibley Szanyi; two
daughters, Tammy Sibley and Mary Szanyi; a son, John Stephen Szanyi Jr.; a brother,
Joseph Szanyi; and three sisters, Mary Demmerly, Dorothy Walsh, and Carol Grimmer; and
WHEREAS, he is also survived by his grandchildren, Kelsey Valentine, Victoria
Sheets, and William Sheets; and great-grandchildren, Westyn Thompson and Micah
Valentine; and

WHEREAS, with the death of John Stephen Szanyi Sr., Louisiana has lost one of its
finest sons, a quintessential southern gentleman who loved his community and whose
accomplishments have left an indelible mark upon his community, state, and nation; and
WHEREAS, his passing has left a substantial void in the Livingston community and
a sense of loss in the citizens whose lives he touched, and his memory shall live forever in
the minds and hearts of all those who knew and loved this remarkable gentleman.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of John Stephen Szanyi Sr., and
extends enduring appreciation for the tremendous pride and honor that he will forever bring
to the Livingston community, the state of Louisiana, and the United States of America.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
family of John Stephen Szanyi Sr.
