SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 151
BY SENATOR GATTI
A RESOLUTION
To commend the Benton High School of Benton, Louisiana golf team on winning its fifth
consecutive Division II state championship.
WHEREAS, the Benton High golf team won its fifth consecutive state title despite
losing three key golfers who participated in the previous championships and who graduated
in 2015; and
WHEREAS, members of the 2016 state championship golf team are Hayden White,
David Cole, Colton Ryan, Phil Tran and Alex Acurio, all of whom contributed to the team
victory and another successful golf season at Benton High School; and
WHEREAS, with a younger group of primarily underclassmen, Coach Tim Cram
challenged the younger golfers to bring home the school's fifth consecutive state title, an
exceedingly difficult feat; and
WHEREAS, Benton High golfer, Hayden White and Loranger High School's
Kristofer Kerr tied for the lowest score at the end of the thirty-six hole event and remained
tied through a seven-hole playoff which was eventually called for darkness, leaving the two
young men tied for medalist honors and they were named co-champions; and
WHEREAS, the Benton team shot a second round four-over-par two hundred
ninety-two team total at The Wetlands Golf Course in Lafayette, Louisiana, winning over
E.D. White High School from Thibodaux, Louisiana by fourteen strokes; and
WHEREAS, Coach Cram stated that his golfers "played better today (the second day
of the seventy-two hole event) than yesterday" and "they showed a lot of grit", as he
expressed great pride in his players; and
WHEREAS, Hayden White shot a three under par sixty-nine in the first round and
began the second round with six birdies on the front nine, thus notching a five under par
second round to finish the seventy-two holes at eight under par and tied for first place; and

WHEREAS, David Cole, a senior who ended his high school golf career with four
state championship titles, and Colton Ryan tied for sixth at the end of thirty-six holes with
Ryan finishing with a one over par seventy-three and Cole shooting a second round
seventy-five; and
WHEREAS, Phil Tran shot a second round seventy-seven and finished nineteenth
with a two-day tally of five over par; and
WHEREAS, Alex Acurio's scores did not contribute to the final team score, as only
the top four scores are considered, it should be noted that he shot a one under par
seventy-one on the final day, bettering his first round score by nine strokes; and
WHEREAS, with exceptional concentration and a clear view of the eventual goal of
another state golf championship, the 2016 Benton High School golf team brought home the
fifth consecutive District II state championship for their team, their coach, and their school.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend the Benton High School golf team on winning its fifth consecutive
Division II state championship.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
