HLS 172ES-89 ORIGINAL 2017 Second Extraordinary Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 4 BY REPRESENTATIVE BROADWATER COMMENDATIONS: Commends U.S. capitol police officers David Bailey, Henry Cabrera, and Crystal Griner for their heroic actions on June 14, 2017 1 A RESOLUTION 2To commend U.S. capitol police officers David Bailey, Henry Cabrera, and Crystal Griner 3 for heroism during a violent attack on June 14, 2017. 4 WHEREAS, more than two thousand officers and civilians work for the capitol 5police force and are tasked with protecting the members, employees, visitors, and facilities 6of Congress; and 7 WHEREAS, officers David Bailey, Henry Cabrera, and Crystal Griner were assigned 8to ensure the safety and security of U.S. Congressman Steve Scalise, House Republican 9Whip from Louisiana; and 10 WHEREAS, on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, Representative Scalise and other 11congressmen and aides were practicing in Alexandria, Virginia, for an annual charity 12baseball game against their Democrat counterparts in congress when a rifle-wielding attacker 13opened fire; and 14 WHEREAS, the officers immediately moved to intercept the shooter to protect those 15in their charge; despite bullet wounds suffered by Officer Bailey and Officer Griner, these 16officers bravely performed their duties and engaged the perpetrator in a gun battle that ended 17in his death; thankfully, officers Bailey and Griner did not suffer life-threatening injuries and 18are in good condition; and 19 WHEREAS, President Donald Trump condemned the brutal assault on members of 20congress and their aides, offered prayers for the swift recovery of those who were shot, and 21praised the officers who intervened; President Trump said, "many lives would have been lost Page 1 of 2 HLS 172ES-89 ORIGINAL HR NO. 4 1if not for the heroic actions of the two capitol police officers who took down the gunman 2despite sustaining gunshot wounds"; and 3 WHEREAS, U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senator Rand Paul, and Representative 4Joe Barton, along with Senator Jeff Flake, who was at the baseball practice when the attack 5occurred, called the officers heroes and credited them with saving lives with their swift and 6decisive actions; Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa commended the three officers for 7their "heroic and appropriate response"; and 8 WHEREAS, the citizens of the state are grateful for the effective responses of Officer 9David Bailey, Officer Henry Cabrera, and Officer Crystal Griner in the protection of 10Louisiana native son Steve Scalise and others, and it is fitting to commend these officers on 11the brave execution of their duties. 12 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 13Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend U.S. capitol Officer David Bailey, Officer 14Henry Cabrera, and Officer Crystal Griner for heroic actions on June 14, 2017; and does 15hereby offer heartfelt thanks for their invaluable roles in protecting U.S. Representative 16Steve Scalise, other congressmen, and aides during a violent attack.
