A RESOLUTION
To commend U.S. capitol police officers David Bailey, Henry Cabrera, and Crystal Griner
for heroism during a violent attack on June 14, 2017.
WHEREAS, more than two thousand officers and civilians work for the capitol
police force and are tasked with protecting the members, employees, visitors, and facilities
of Congress; and
WHEREAS, officers David Bailey, Henry Cabrera, and Crystal Griner were assigned
to ensure the safety and security of U.S. Congressman Steve Scalise, House Republican
Whip from Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, Representative Scalise and other
congressmen and aides were practicing in Alexandria, Virginia, for an annual charity
baseball game against their Democrat counterparts in congress when a rifle-wielding attacker
opened fire; and

WHEREAS, the officers immediately moved to intercept the shooter to protect those
in their charge; despite bullet wounds suffered by Officer Bailey and Officer Griner, these
officers bravely performed their duties and engaged the perpetrator in a gun battle that ended
in his death; thankfully, officers Bailey and Griner did not suffer life-threatening injuries and
are in good condition; and
WHEREAS, President Donald Trump condemned the brutal assault on members of
congress and their aides, offered prayers for the swift recovery of those who were shot, and
praised the officers who intervened; President Trump said, "many lives would have been lost
if not for the heroic actions of the two capitol police officers who took down the gunman
despite sustaining gunshot wounds"; and
WHEREAS, U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senator Rand Paul, and Representative
Joe Barton, along with Senator Jeff Flake, who was at the baseball practice when the attack
occurred, called the officers heroes and credited them with saving lives with their swift and
decisive actions; Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa commended the three officers for
their "heroic and appropriate response"; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of the state are grateful for the effective responses of Officer
David Bailey, Officer Henry Cabrera, and Officer Crystal Griner in the protection of
Louisiana native son Steve Scalise and others, and it is fitting to commend these officers on
the brave execution of their duties.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend U.S. capitol Officer David Bailey, Officer
Henry Cabrera, and Officer Crystal Griner for heroic actions on June 14, 2017; and does
hereby offer heartfelt thanks for their invaluable roles in protecting U.S. Representative
Steve Scalise, other congressmen, and aides during a violent attack.
