A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To commend Dr. G. E. Ghali, D.D.S., M.D., F.A.C.S., F.R.C.S. (Ed.), Chancellor of
Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, for extraordinary
leadership in the advancement of the institution and in the rich legacy of medical
instruction and research that he contributes to his community, the state, and the
world.
WHEREAS, Dr. G. E. Ghali's leadership has led to LSU Health Sciences Center
Shreveport receiving full ACGME accreditation for all training programs, completing fiscal
year 2016 with a positive operating margin, and the development of new relationships with
six community hospitals signing memorandums of understanding to enhance education and
clinical activities thereby increasing health care services for the populace of north Louisiana
and the state as a whole; and
WHEREAS, before Dr. Ghali began his service in 2016 as chancellor and dean of
the LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport, he had amassed a vast knowledge and
experience in the field of medicine, serving as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and as the
Jack W. Gamble Endowed Chair in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; and
WHEREAS, in 2012, Dr. Ghali led the initiative to establish the Cleft Lip and Palate
Program at Shriners Hospitals for Children-Shreveport, and since that time has served as
director of the program; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Ghali is also the founder of the Ark-La-Tex Craniofacial and Cleft
Team, which provides complex oral and maxillofacial care to children and adults across
multiple healthcare institutions; and
WHEREAS, the LSU System received significant domestic and international
recognition for the rare and lifesaving surgery performed by Dr. Ghali on a three-year-old
Brazilian patient with a five-pound facial myxoma whose family was unable to secure
needed medical services in her home country; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Ghali performed this surgery, as he has many others in the past, at
no cost to the patient, and was awarded the "2017 Volunteer Service Award for Global
Impact" by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., in part for his work on this case; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Ghali has received numerous awards including "The Samaritan of
the Year" (Samaritan Counseling Center), and the "William Haynie, MD Award in
Pediatrics" (Northwest Louisiana Pediatric Society); and
WHEREAS, Dr. Ghali's service to humanity includes eighteen years of travel to India
performing missionary work to operate on those suffering with cleft lips and palates, as well
as adults with oral, head, and neck cancer, and serving as an instructor to all branches of the
military regarding management of maxillofacial injuries; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Ghali has been recognized for his leadership role in developing an 
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Section within the American College of Surgeons as well
as developing guidelines for accepting Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons as full fellows in the
American College of Surgeons, and as recipients of the "Distinguished Educator Award"
from the Southeastern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the "William J. Gies
Foundation Award" and the "Robert V. Walker Distinguished Service Award" from the
American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Ghali's work has been memorialized in eighty-two publications and
in contributions to forty books; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Ghali has received more than three hundred invitations to lecture
all across the world; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Ghali shares his wonderful life with his wife, Hope, and their
children, Gregor, Grace, Gabrielle, and Garrisyn.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend Dr. G. E. Ghali, MD, Chancellor of Louisiana State University Health Sciences
Center in Shreveport, for extraordinary leadership in the advancement of the institution and
for the rich legacy of medical instruction and research that he contributes to the world; and
does hereby extend its best wishes and gratitude to Dr. G. E. Ghali for his contributions and
continued success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Dr. G. E. Ghali, D.D.S, M.D., F.A.C.S., and F.R.C.S. (Ed.).
