HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 105

A RESOLUTION
To commend the Florien Lady Blackcats girls' basketball team upon winning the Louisiana
Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Girls' State Basketball Championship, Class B.
WHEREAS, under the tutelage of head coach Dewain Strother, Florien High School
has had a storied girls' basketball program for many years winning over one thousand games
since 1983, including five championships, five runners-up, and sixteen state tournament
appearances; and
WHEREAS, the 2016-2017 Lady Blackcats continued that tradition with an overall
35-2 season gaining them a place in the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Girls' State Basketball
Championship, Class B; and
WHEREAS, during the tournament the Lady Blackcats defeated Midland 74-40,
Hathaway 72-54, and Holden 62-58, avenging the Blackcats' loss in last year's championship
game, placing them in the finals against Anacoco; and
WHEREAS, during the championship game, Florien took control of the game from
the outset with six unanswered points at the beginning, while Anacoco fought back to lead
by two points at halftime but they could not sustain the lead as the Lady Blackcats scored
sixteen unanswered points at the beginning of the second half putting the game out of reach
for the Lady Indians from Anacoco with a final score of 53-38; and
WHEREAS, the Lady Blackcats were led during the 2016-2017 season by Aja Law,
their six-foot center who averaged twenty points a game with eleven rebounds, joined by
usual starters Ashlyn Anthony, MaCayla Miller, Morgan Miller, and Kendra Richardson,
and a strong bench in Katie Alford, Alasia Gipson, Kylee Strother, and Destinee Strother.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Florien Lady Blackcats girls' basketball

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Coach Dewain Strother of Florien High School.
