HLS 17RS-3728 ORIGINAL 2017 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 243 BY REPRESENTATIVES GLOVER, BAGLEY, CARMODY, COX, HORTON, JENKINS, SEABAUGH, JIM MORRIS, AND NORTON COMMENDATIONS: Commends Bossier Parish Community College, Louisiana State University in Shreveport, and Southern University at Shreveport upon their fiftieth anniversaries 1 A RESOLUTION 2To commend and congratulate Bossier Parish Community College, Louisiana State 3 University in Shreveport, and Southern University at Shreveport on their fiftieth 4 anniversaries and further recognize their promotion of higher education in Louisiana. 5 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Legislature authorized the creation of Bossier Parish 6Community College as a pilot program by House Concurrent Resolution No. 52 of the 1966 7Regular Session of the Legislature, and in the fall of 1967, Bossier Parish Community 8College conducted classes for the first time with one hundred one students and only five full- 9time faculty; and 10 WHEREAS, the Bossier Parish Community College student population has grown 11to nearly ten thousand students who are currently enrolled; and 12 WHEREAS, the mission statement of Bossier Parish Community College is to 13promote attainment of educational goals within the community and strengthen the regional 14economy through the innovative delivery of quality courses and programs that provide sound 15academic education, broad vocational and career training, continued education, and varied 16community services; and 17 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Legislature authorized the creation of Louisiana State 18University in Shreveport by Act No. 41 of the 1964 Regular Session of the Legislature, and 19the institution opened in 1967 as a two-year community college but transitioned into a four- 20year college in 1972; and Page 1 of 3 HLS 17RS-3728 ORIGINAL HR NO. 243 1 WHEREAS, Louisiana State University in Shreveport enrolled over four thousand 2students in the fall of 2015 and now offers more than twenty undergraduate programs, 3twelve master's degrees, one doctoral degree, many night and online courses, and more than 4seventy extracurricular organizations; and 5 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Legislature authorized the creation of Southern University 6at Shreveport by Act No. 42 of the 1964 Regular Session of the Legislature, and the 7institution began conducting classes in 1967; and 8 WHEREAS, the mission statement of Southern University at Shreveport encourages 9providing quality education for its students, preparing students for careers in both technical 10and occupational fields, offering courses and programs that are transferable to other colleges 11and universities, and being dedicated to excellence in instruction and community service 12while also promoting cultural diversity and seeking partnerships with business and industry; 13and 14 WHEREAS, Southern University at Shreveport is an integral component of the 15Southern University System, which has a diverse enrollment of more than twelve thousand 16students; and 17 WHEREAS, Bossier Parish Community College, Louisiana State University in 18Shreveport, and Southern University at Shreveport are all accredited by the Southern 19Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges; and 20 WHEREAS, Bossier Parish Community College, Louisiana State University in 21Shreveport, and Southern University at Shreveport have begun working on a partnership for 22the purpose of creating the option for students to better themselves and to more easily 23transfer between schools. 24 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 25Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Bossier Parish Community 26College, Louisiana State University in Shreveport, and Southern University at Shreveport 27on their fiftieth anniversaries and further recognize their promotion of higher education in 28the great state of Louisiana. 29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted 30to the office of the chancellor for Bossier Parish Community College, the office of the Page 2 of 3 HLS 17RS-3728 ORIGINAL HR NO. 243 1chancellor for Louisiana State University in Shreveport, and the office of the chancellor for 2Southern University at Shreveport.
