HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 243
BY REPRESENTATIVES GLOVER, BAGLEY, CARMODY, COX, HORTON, JENKINS,
JIM MORRIS, NORTON, AND SEABAUGH
A RESOLUTION
To commend and congratulate Bossier Parish Community College, Louisiana State
University in Shreveport, and Southern University at Shreveport on their fiftieth
anniversaries and further recognize their promotion of higher education in Louisiana.
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Legislature authorized the creation of Bossier Parish
Community College as a pilot program by House Concurrent Resolution No. 52 of the 1966
Regular Session of the Legislature, and in the fall of 1967, Bossier Parish Community
College conducted classes for the first time with one hundred one students and only five full-
time faculty; and
WHEREAS, the Bossier Parish Community College student population has grown
to nearly ten thousand students who are currently enrolled; and 
WHEREAS, the mission statement of Bossier Parish Community College is to
promote attainment of educational goals within the community and strengthen the regional
economy through the innovative delivery of quality courses and programs that provide sound
academic education, broad vocational and career training, continued education, and varied
community services; and
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Legislature authorized the creation of Louisiana State
University in Shreveport by Act No. 41 of the 1964 Regular Session of the Legislature, and
the institution opened in 1967 as a two-year community college but transitioned into a four-
year college in 1972; and
WHEREAS, Louisiana State University in Shreveport enrolled over four thousand
students in the fall of 2015 and now offers more than twenty undergraduate programs,
twelve master's degrees, one doctoral degree, many night and online courses, and more than
seventy extracurricular organizations; and

WHEREAS, the Louisiana Legislature authorized the creation of Southern University
at Shreveport by Act No. 42 of the 1964 Regular Session of the Legislature, and the
institution began conducting classes in 1967; and
WHEREAS, the mission statement of Southern University at Shreveport encourages 
providing quality education for its students,  preparing students for careers in both technical
and occupational fields, offering courses and programs that are transferable to other colleges
and universities, and being dedicated to excellence in instruction and community service
while also promoting cultural diversity and seeking partnerships with business and industry;
and
WHEREAS, Southern University at Shreveport is an integral component of the
Southern University System, which has a diverse enrollment of more than twelve thousand
students; and
WHEREAS, Bossier Parish Community College, Louisiana State University in
Shreveport, and Southern University at Shreveport are all accredited by the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges; and
WHEREAS, Bossier Parish Community College, Louisiana State University in
Shreveport, and Southern University at Shreveport have begun working on a partnership for
the purpose of creating the option for students to better themselves and to more easily
transfer between schools.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Bossier Parish Community
College, Louisiana State University in Shreveport, and Southern University at Shreveport
on their fiftieth anniversaries and further recognize their promotion of higher education in
the great state of Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the office of the chancellor for Bossier Parish Community College, the office of the
chancellor for Louisiana State University in Shreveport, and the office of the chancellor for
Southern University at Shreveport.
