HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 67

A RESOLUTION
To commend the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival and to designate Thursday, April 27,
2017, as Crawfish Festival Day at the state capitol.
WHEREAS, the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival begins on Friday, May 5, 2017,
and lasts through Sunday, May 7, 2017; and
WHEREAS, this crawfish festival is known around the country and even the world;
and
WHEREAS, every May, thousands of hungry people flock to Breaux Bridge to be
part of the festivities; and
WHEREAS, the world famous festival began in 1960 as a spin-off of the Breaux
Bridge Centennial Celebration, just after the Louisiana Legislature had named Breaux
Bridge the Crawfish Capital of the World in 1959; and
WHEREAS, the crawfish festival is overseen by the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival
Association, which is a volunteer association whose mission is to promote the crawfish
industry in Louisiana and the culture of Cajun country; and
WHEREAS, since its inception, the crawfish festival has also become one of the
largest gatherings of world-famous Cajun, Zydeco, and Swamp Pop musicians, and plays
host to more than thirty bands during the three-day festival; and
WHEREAS, at the crawfish festival, people enjoy tasting crawfish prepared in every
imaginable way, be it fried, boiled, in an étouffée, bisque, boudin, pie or jambalaya, and
crawdogs, along with other Cajun favorites, such as shrimp, gumbo, red beans and rice; and
WHEREAS, in addition to music and cuisine, the crawfish festival features a wide
variety of fun-filled events, such as crawfish races, Cajun & Zydeco dance contests, a
crawfish étouffée cook-off, and a crawfish eating contest; and

WHEREAS, the crawfish festival also features a parade that honors the Crawfish
Queen, Miss McKenzie Melancon, who rules over the festivities with her King, Mr. Lionel
Robin, both of Breaux Bridge; and
WHEREAS, the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival has been recognized several times
as Festival of the Year, Division II, by the Louisiana Association of Fairs and Festivals and
has received numerous awards for the marketing of the festival; and
WHEREAS, the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival has been named a Top 20 Event
by the Southeast Tourism Society and was named a Top 10 Food Festival by USA Today.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival; does
hereby designate Thursday, April 27, 2017, as Crawfish Festival Day at the state capitol; and
enthusiastically invites all citizens of the state of Louisiana to participate in this wonderful
celebration of Cajun cuisine and music in May of 2017.
