SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Commends the efforts of The Links, Incorporated, and
designates May 8, 2017, as Louisiana Links Day at the state capitol
1 A RESOLUTION
2To commend the efforts of The Links, Incorporated, and to designate Monday, May 8, 2017,
3 as Louisiana Links Day at the state capitol.
4 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated, is an international organization of women of
5color dedicated to improving the quality of life for humankind; and
6 WHEREAS, the worldwide organization consists of fourteen thousand members in
7two hundred eighty chapters in forty-one states, the District of Colombia, and the
8Commonwealth of the Bahamas; and
9 WHEREAS, there are eight Links chapters in the state of Louisiana, namely the
10Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Crescent City, LaCapitale, Monroe-Grambling, New Orleans,
11Pontchartrain, and Shreveport chapters; and
12 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated, was founded in 1946 by Margaret Hawkins
13and Sarah Scott in hopes of promoting civic, educational, and cultural achievement through
14the creation of their service organization; and
15 WHEREAS, the members of The Links, Incorporated, are influential decision makers
16and opinion leaders; and
17 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated, has attracted many distinguished women who
18are individual achievers and who have made a difference in their communities and in the
19world; and

1 WHEREAS, the members of The Links are business and civic leaders, role models,
2mentors, activists, and volunteers who work towards a common vision by engaging like-
3minded organizations and individuals as partners; and
4 WHEREAS, the outstanding programming of The Links, Incorporated, has five
5facets: National Trends and Services, the Arts, Services to Youth, International Trends and
6Services, and Health and Human Services; and
7 WHEREAS, the programs are implemented through strategies such as public
8information and education, economic development, and public policy campaigns; and
9 WHEREAS, the mission of The Links, Incorporated, has been to discern a need and
10to fill it, which The Links has done by donating money and time to charitable efforts,
11including one million dollars to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored
12People and two million dollars to the United Negro College Fund; and
13 WHEREAS, its members contribute more than five hundred thousand documented
14hours of community service annually, strengthening their communities and enhancing the
15nation; and
16 WHEREAS, Links Day at the capitol is a project of the southern area of The Links,
17Incorporated, which includes chapters in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia,
18Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina; and
19 WHEREAS, the first Louisiana Links Day at the state capitol occurred on May 19,
202005; and
21 WHEREAS, the members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2005 to
22inform their legislators that they supported legislation and the development of policies in line
23with Healthy People 2010; and
24 WHEREAS, the members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2006 to
25inform their legislators that they supported legislation and the development of policies that
26provided funding and infrastructure necessary to improve health care in Louisiana; and
27 WHEREAS, the members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2007 to
28inform their legislators that they supported legislation and the development of policies that
29closed the gap in poverty and education, that provided adequate and affordable health care

1to all citizens, that brought Louisiana people home, that revitalized New Orleans public
2schools, and that guaranteed displaced Louisiana voters their constitutional right to vote; and
3 WHEREAS, the members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2008 to
4inform their legislators that they supported legislation and the development of policies aimed
5at reducing the obesity rate of children in Louisiana and other healthcare and education
6initiatives aimed at creating a better quality of life in Louisiana; and
7 WHEREAS, the members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2009, 2010,
82011, and 2012, to advocate for health care and education policies that would continue to
9improve the lives of all Louisiana citizens; and
10 WHEREAS, the members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2013 to
11advocate for laws and policies in health care, education, voting rights, gun control, and equal
12pay for women; and
13 WHEREAS, in 2014, the members of Louisiana Links voiced their concern and
14continued support of programs seeking to enrich, sustain, and ensure the cultural and
15economic survival of African Americans and persons of African ancestry; and
16 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated, merits a special measure of commendation as
17they visit the Louisiana state capitol on Monday, May 8, 2017, for Louisiana Links Day.
18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
19Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the efforts of The Links, Incorporated, and
20does hereby designate Monday, May 8, 2017, as Louisiana Links Day at the state capitol.
21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
22to the southern area director of The Links, Incorporated.
