Commends Julia Thornton for her dedication and service and congratulates her upon her well-deserved retirement from CenturyLink, Inc. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To commend Julia Thornton for her dedication and service and to congratulate her upon her 3 well-deserved retirement from CenturyLink, Inc. 4 WHEREAS, Julia Thornton recently retired from her final assignment of a lifetime 5 dedicated to the admirable vocation of service to government and legislative-related 6 activities, advocacy for women and children, humanitarian efforts, selfless volunteerism, and 7 exceptional achievement; and 8 WHEREAS, Ms. Thornton has provided over three decades of legal and 9 governmental services working for the betterment of the state of Louisiana; and 10 WHEREAS, her outstanding government consultation, invaluable legal aptitude, 11 generous volunteerism, and effective leadership have served many; and 12 WHEREAS, she is a graduate of C.E. Byrd High School in Shreveport, the 13 University of Mississippi, and the Tulane University of Law School in New Orleans; and 14 WHEREAS, Ms. Thornton has been a tireless governmental representative serving 15 as director of governmental and regulatory affairs for Louisiana and Mississippi of 16 CenturyLink, Inc., one of the largest companies in the state; and 17 WHEREAS, in addition to her business acumen, her leadership talents were of great 18 service to the early childhood development community as the president and chief executive Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 104 SLS 17RS-1948 ORIGINAL 1 officer of Steps to Success, a statewide initiative; and 2 WHEREAS, she has represented a vast array of clients, including Blue Cross and 3 Blue Shield of Louisiana, the University of New Orleans, the Louisiana State University 4 System Office, and the Louisiana Board of Regents; and 5 WHEREAS, she has worked tirelessly to better her community and state and has 6 served as the chair of the Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Baton Rouge Area, as chair of 7 the Family Services of the Greater Baton Rouge area, as division chair of the Woman's 8 Hospital Capital Campaign, as a Young Women's Christian Association board officer, as a 9 Junior League member in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, on the board of directors of the 10 Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation, as an officer of the Louisiana Relay 11 Administration, and as a board member of the Louisiana Telecommunications Association; 12 and 13 WHEREAS, Julia Thornton's special and incomparable leadership skills have been 14 recognized by her selection to the Baton Rouge Leadership Class of 1987 and the Louisiana 15 Leadership Class of 1999; and 16 WHEREAS, upon her retirement she has returned to Oxford, Mississippi, the home 17 of her alma mater, to continue her legacy of service on the Old Miss Women's Council. 18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 19 express gratitude to Julia Thornton for her lifetime of service and many achievements and 20 does congratulate her upon her retirement from CenturyLink, Inc. 21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Julia 22 Thornton.
