SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 11
BY SENATOR MORRISH AND REPRESENTATIVE GUINN
A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To designate October as Eczema Awareness Month in Louisiana.
WHEREAS, eczema is a very common condition that causes the skin to be red, itchy,
dry, and scaly, and more than thirty million Americans have some form of it; and
WHEREAS, at its most severe, eczema can cause serious health problems,
profoundly affect quality of life, and interfere with normal, everyday activities; and
WHEREAS, different types of eczema include atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis,
dyshidrotic eczema, hand eczema, neurodermatitis, nummular eczema, and stasis dermatitis;
and
WHEREAS, all types of eczema cause itching and redness, but some may also cause
the skin to blister, weep, or peel; and
WHEREAS, the most common type, which can also be severe and long-lasting, is
atopic dermatitis; and
WHEREAS, eczema generally appears in the first six months to five years of a
child's life and babies usually develop it on their face, especially the cheeks and chin, but it
can appear anywhere on the body and symptoms may be different from one child to the next;
and
WHEREAS, the pain and constant itch of eczema can distress children and disturb
their sleep, interfere with school, cause low self-esteem, make them feel self-conscious about
their appearance, and avoid social situations; and
WHEREAS, each individual's eczema can be triggered by unique environmental
factors, which may appear when the body reacts to environmental elements that would
normally be harmless; and
WHEREAS, Eczema Awareness Month serves as an opportunity to focus attention
on eczema and its symptoms, triggers, and treatments.
