SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 114

A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To commend Juan D'Vaughn Pierre on being named to the 2017 Louisiana Sports Hall of
Fame.
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches, Louisiana, each year
collaborates with the Louisiana Sports Writers Association in selecting a limited number of
sports figures who embody the character, skill, and talents worthy of being named to the hall
of fame; and
WHEREAS, the 2017 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class includes Juan
D'Vaughn Pierre; and
WHEREAS, Juan Pierre began his sporting career at Alexandria High School, where
he was a standout in basketball and baseball, and upon graduating continued to excel as a
baseball player for Galveston College, where he was the 1998 Sun Belt Conference Player
of the Year, and the University of Alabama; and
WHEREAS, he began his professional career with the Portland Rockies of the
Northwest League then during his lengthy and successful career went on to play for the
Colorado Rockies, Florida Marlins, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White
Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, and Miami Marlins; and
WHEREAS, Juan Pierre compiled an outstanding .295 batting average with three
200-hit seasons, led the National Baseball League in hits in 2004 and 2006, earned 2,217
career hits and 517 rounds batted in, was a member of the 2003 World Series champion
Florida Marlins, and was named the most valuable player by the South Chapter of the
Baseball Writers' Association of America; and
WHEREAS, he announced his retirement from professional baseball on February 27,
2015; and
WHEREAS, the successful baseball career of Juan D'Vaughn Pierre has rightly
earned him a place among the many greats in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend and congratulate Juan D'Vaughn Pierre on being named to the 2017 Louisiana
Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Juan D'Vaughn Pierre.
