SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 16
BY SENATOR THOMPSON AND REPRESENTATI VE FALCONER 
A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To commend and congratulate the people of Canada on their nation's 150th Anniversary of
Confederation and on the Consulate General of Canada's 50th anniversary of
diplomatic representation to Louisiana.
WHEREAS, Canada was founded in 1867, making this year the 150th Anniversary
of Confederation and commemorating a century and a half in which the peoples of the
United States and Canada have stood together as friends, neighbors, trading partners, and
allies; and 
WHEREAS, 2017 is also the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Consulate
General of Canada to advance diplomatic relations with the state of Louisiana; and 
WHEREAS, the results of the advanced diplomatic relations are clearly evidenced
by Canada becoming Louisiana's third largest trade customer and Canada and Louisiana
sharing a $4.2 billion trade in goods last year resulting in nearly 96,000 Louisiana jobs being
supported by trade and investment from Canada, and last year over 206,000 Canadians
visited Louisiana spending $178 million; and
WHEREAS, the energy sectors of Louisiana and Canada cooperate in providing the
secure and reliable energy that drives North American economic competitiveness on the
world stage; and 
WHEREAS, the relationship between the United States and Canada is unique and a
model for the world, with our two countries bound by a vibrant history of democratic
governance, economic and defense partnerships, and cultural ties; and
WHEREAS, Canada is the United States' largest export market with two-way trade
in goods and services between the nations totaling in excess of $635 billion in 2016, or more
than $1.7 billion every day; and

WHEREAS, Canada and the United States work together through programs such as
the International Border Enforcement Teams to secure a 5,500 mile border over which
400,000 people cross each day; and 
WHEREAS, Canada and Louisiana also share rich historical, cultural, and family ties
stretching back to the time when prehistoric peoples in northeastern Louisiana traded with
their counterparts as far north as Canada; and
WHEREAS, Acadians in Canada and in Louisiana share family ties that span
centuries and are celebrated annually; and
WHEREAS, the connections between New France in Canada and Louisiana are part
of the lore of Europeans' discovery of North America; and 
WHEREAS, the people of Louisiana and the people of Canada look forward to many
more years of cooperation, friendship, trade, investment, tourism, and good will.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend and congratulate the people of Canada on their 150th Anniversary of
Confederation and on the Consulate General of Canada's 50th anniversary of diplomatic
representation to Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
Consul General of Canada, Mrs. Sara Wilshaw, as an expression of high regard by the
Legislature of Louisiana for Canada, its people, and our friendship.
