SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 47
BY SENATOR PERRY AND REPRESENTATI VES HENSGENS AND MIGUEZ 
A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To express the sincere condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of Judge
Marcus Anson Broussard Jr. of Abbeville, Louisiana.
WHEREAS, Judicial District Fifteen Judge Marcus Anson Broussard Jr. died
peacefully on March 5, 2017, at his home and surrounded by his family; and
WHEREAS, beginning his education in Catholic and public schools, Judge
Broussard graduated from high school at St. Stanislas College in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi,
in 1946; and
WHEREAS, Marcus Broussard joined the Louisiana National Guard in 1946 as a
private in the United States Army, and during his service he was promoted to the rank of
Second Lieutenant in the Infantry in 1952, First Lieutenant in 1956, and he was honorably
discharged from the army on January 14, 1958; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Broussard married Barbara Schlesinger of Abbeville in 1951, and
the couple enjoyed a wonderful marriage raising six children and in later years, shared their
love and joy with a family enriched by grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Marcus Broussard Jr. earned a bachelor of art's degree from the
University of Southwestern Louisiana, now known as the University of Louisiana at
Lafayette, and in 1955 he graduated from law school at Loyola University of the South in
New Orleans; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Broussard was admitted to the practice of law in Louisiana on June
10, 1955, having received the 1953 Dean's award, given annually to recognize the first year
student with the highest grade point average; he was a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, a
national Honor Society for law students; Blue Key; and on the Loyola Law Review; and
WHEREAS, Marcus Broussard returned to his native Abbeville in 1955 and together

with his father, Marcus A. Broussard Sr., they established the firm of Broussard and
Broussard; with a later addition of Paul G. Moresi Jr., the firm was again renamed
Broussard, Broussard and Moresi; and
WHEREAS, in August 1958, Marcus Broussard Jr. was appointed by the governor
to serve as Abbeville's first city judge, a position created by the legislature in the 1958
session; and
WHEREAS, Judge Broussard was elected to the position of city judge of Abbeville
in 1960 and was continually reelected without opposition until his retirement from the bench
in 1984; and
WHEREAS, in 1986, Mr. Broussard Jr. and his father were joined in the law firm by
a third generation, Edward B. Broussard, who eventually followed in his father's footsteps
and was elected Abbeville city court judge; and
WHEREAS, following the retirement from the bench of Judge Marcus Broussard,
the Louisiana Supreme Court appointed him to sit as judge pro tempore in the Fifteenth
District Court, encompassing the parishes of Acadia, Lafayette, and Vermilion, and served
in that position from 1982 until 1990 and from 1997 through 1998; and
WHEREAS, Judge Marcus Broussard was selected Abbeville's "Outstanding Citizen"
in 1963, recognizing his contributions to his native town; and
WHEREAS, in 1965 and 1966, Judge Broussard served as president of the Abbeville
Human Relations Council and was a member of that council for twenty years; and
WHEREAS, Judge Broussard served his community in numerous ways over the
years, was a charter member of the town's Kiwanis Club, served as its president for two
years and was selected as the club's Outstanding Member for 1963 and 1964, and in the
years 1967 through 1970, he served as chairman of the Kiwanis Fishing Rodeo, an important
community event; and
WHEREAS, Judge Broussard's civic contributions also included serving as a member
of the board of directors of the Abbeville Chamber of Commerce for many years and served
as president of the chamber from 1965 through 1967, was a member and past president of
the Abbeville Country Club, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus as a Fourth
Degree Knight; and

WHEREAS, Marcus Anson Broussard Jr., an attorney, a judge, a family man, and
a leading citizen of Abbeville, leaves a legacy of commitment to his family, his faith, the
law, and his beloved native town which marks a long life, well lived.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
express the sincere condolences upon the death of Judge Marcus Anson Broussard Jr. of
Abbeville, Louisiana. 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Barbara Schlesinger Broussard.
