2017 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 62 BY SENATOR MARTINY A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To recognize May 2017 as Building Safety Month. WHEREAS, the Building Safety Month campaign is a public awareness effort designed to help individuals, families, and businesses understand what it takes to create safe and sustainable structures; and WHEREAS, this campaign is sponsored by the Building Officials Association of Louisiana and stresses that Louisiana and cities across this great state are committed to recognizing that the growth and strength of both depend on the safety and economic value of homes, buildings, and infrastructure built in the state; and WHEREAS, the economic benefits of having safe buildings and infrastructure throughout Louisiana are crucial to growing the state and maintaining a healthy and vibrant economy; and WHEREAS, the alert and watchful guardians of this structural integrity are building safety and fire prevention officials, architects, engineers, builders, tradespeople, design professionals, laborers, and all in the construction industry who work continuously to ensure the safe construction of buildings and infrastructure; and WHEREAS, these people involved in the construction industry are members of the International Code Council, a United States based organization which brings together local, state, and federal officials that are experts in the construction environment to create and implement the highest possible standards for the protection of citizens of the nation; and WHEREAS, the entire nation benefits economically and technologically from using these International Codes that are considered and refined by a nationwide, voluntary consensus codes and standards developing organization, thus enabling our government to avoid the high cost and complexity of developing and maintaining their own codes; and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 62 ENROLLED WHEREAS, these International Codes allow experts to create and implement the highest quality codes to protect citizens of the nation and Louisiana in the buildings where citizens live, learn, work, worship, and play; and WHEREAS, a major aim of the International Code Council is to ensure that buildings and infrastructure are built to withstand both man-made and natural disasters, including floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, recreational land fires, and earthquakes, the first three of which have proven devastating to much of Louisiana and many of her citizens in merely the last fourteen months; and WHEREAS, Building Safety Month is sponsored by the International Codes Council to remind the public about the critical role of elected officials as guardians of public safety who assure the citizens of safe, efficient, and livable buildings that are essential to keeping the United States great and an integral power on the world stage. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize May 2017 as Building Safety Month. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Rick Foster on behalf of the Building Officials Association of Louisiana.
