WHEREAS, it is with great sorrow that the Legislature of Louisiana has learned of the passing of Mrs. Rose Long, wife of Senator Gerald Long, on Sunday, April 30, 2017, after a lengthy battle with cancer; and WHEREAS, Rose Marie Landry was born on September 16, 1947, in Gueydan, Louisiana, to parents Andy and Leontine Landry; and WHEREAS, while attending Northwestern State University, Rose met the love of her life, Gerald Long, and they were married in 1966; and Page 1 of 3 SCR NO. 64 ENROLLED WHEREAS, Rose was the wife and helpmate of Senator Gerald Long, Senate President Pro Tempore, and their life together was a blessed partnership, a grand adventure that lasted fifty-one years; and WHEREAS, as a devoted couple, they were forged in love for each other through the bonds of family and friends and their shared love of Christ, and they served Him as faithful members of First Baptist Church of Natchitoches; and WHEREAS, Rose was never far from her husband's side; they sustained each other through all the trials of public and private life, and their family of three children and ten grandchildren was such a blessing; and WHEREAS, during legislative sessions, Rose led a Bible study group, served as president of the Legislative Spouses Auxiliary, and chairman of the Governor's Prayer Breakfast Committee; and WHEREAS, as a Christian of profound faith, Rose had a desire to help others; she touched countless lives by sharing her wisdom, grace, and strength, and she strived unselfishly to always better the circumstances of the less fortunate; and WHEREAS, she was a bold advocate for issues affecting women and children; she helped to organize crisis pregnancy centers in Ruston, Louisiana, and Rogers, Arkansas, and established a third organization in Natchitoches, the Women's Resource Center; and WHEREAS, Rose was a contributing member of the Louisiana Baptist Moral and Social Concerns Committee; and WHEREAS, the Longs mentored student-athletes and coaches through their association with the sports ministry of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes; and WHEREAS, Rose dedicated a portion of her time to the support of Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB), served as chairman of its annual Louisiana Legends Gala, and was the recipient of the Grassroots Advocacy Award in 2016; and WHEREAS, Rose is also survived by daughter Andrea Phillips, her husband Gregg, and their sons, Josh, Sam, Jacob, and Caleb; daughter Pam Jordan, her husband Wes, and their sons, Drew, Will, and John; son Richard Long, his wife Sheralyn, and their children, Nasby, Jude, and Ruby; along with extended family members and a myriad of close friends; and Page 2 of 3 SCR NO. 64 ENROLLED WHEREAS, Rose Long has been taken from our midst, yet she will be remembered for her loving demeanor, her smile, her kindness, her devotion to family, her joy of life, and her steadfast dedication to Jesus Christ. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express its sincerest condolences upon the passing of a great lady, Rose Landry Long. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby celebrate the life of this generous woman whose spirit was fulfilled by service to her God, her family, and her community and does hereby note the remarkable legacy that shall live on in the hearts of those inspired by her grace. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express heartfelt condolences to our friend and colleague, the Honorable Gerald Long of the Louisiana State Senate, on the loss of his wife.
