SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 85

COMMENDATIONS. Commends Alton Ralph "Red" Sims on his many years of public
service.
1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2 To commend Alton Ralph "Red" Sims on his many years of public service.
3 WHEREAS, Alton Ralph "Red" Sims, a lifelong resident of Calhoun, Louisiana, was
4 born on August 26, 1920, and has devoted his long and stellar career fighting to provide the
5 best education possible for his community; and
6 WHEREAS, his love for children and passion for education led him to decide early
7 in life to become a teacher, and for many years he instilled in his students the values of
8 discipline, hard work, and dedication; and
9 WHEREAS, over the arc of his long career, he would also be a coach and a principal,
10 instilling all the same values to countless children in Ouachita Parish, who affectionately
11 remember Mr. Sims; and
12 WHEREAS, in 1987, he ran to represent the people of District C on the Ouachita
13 Parish School Board and he has since served a remarkable eight consecutive terms on that
14 board; and
15 WHEREAS, during his thirty-year tenure, he has been instrumental in facilitating the
16 renovation of every school in the Ouachita Parish school system, played a vital part in
17 passing several bond issues, oversaw the construction of nine new schools in the past
18 seventeen years, and fought to insure that the children received the highest quality education

1 possible; and
2 WHEREAS, he was also instrumental in the construction of the West Ouachita High
3 School football stadium, and because of his unwavering dedication to the project and his
4 passionate service to the people of his community, the school board unanimously voted in
5 2004, to name the stadium the A.R. "Red" Sims Stadium in his honor; and
6 WHEREAS, his lifetime of achievements and many years of dedicated service to
7 enhancing the lives of the people of Ouachita Parish and the state have made Alton Ralph
8 "Red" Sims a pillar of the community and a role model to be followed.
9 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
10 commend Alton Ralph "Red" Sims on his many years of public service.
11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Alton
12 Ralph "Red" Sims.
