SLS 17RS-1792 ORIGINAL 2017 Regular Session SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 117 BY SENATOR BARROW COMMENDATIONS. Commends the Scotlandville High School Hornets boys basketball team on becoming the 2017 LHSAA Division I state champions. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To commend the Scotlandville High School Hornets boys basketball team on becoming the 3 2017 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division I state champions. 4 WHEREAS, on Saturday, March 11, 2017, the Scotlandville High School Hornets 5 boys basketball team became the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division I 6 state champions at Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles, Louisiana; and 7 WHEREAS, the Scotlandville High School Hornets players Jaylen Hawkins, LaMarq 8 Williams, Malik Williams, Levi Lewis, Shane Jackson, Ja'vonte Smart, Da'vyon Smart, 9 Kelvin Joseph, Reece Beekman, Tai'reon Joseph, David Thomas III, and Jonathan Horton, 10 ended the season with an impressive 53-52 victory over the Brother Martin High School 11 Crusaders to win the state title; and 12 WHEREAS, the first five points of the game were scored by the Hornets, including 13 a three-point shot by Ja'Vonte Smart that opened the scoring eighteen seconds into the game; 14 and 15 WHEREAS, he threaded a pass to Malik Williams, who laid the ball in with under 16 three seconds remaining, giving the Hornets a 14-11 lead after the first period; and 17 WHEREAS, a three-point shot by Jaylen Hawkins and a floater in the lane off an 18 inbound pass by LaMarq Williams assisted in the Hornets' 25-21 lead at the half; and Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 117 SLS 17RS-1792 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, Malik Williams scored seven points in the third quarter as the 2 tug-of-war between the Hornets and the Crusaders continued, and with just over two minutes 3 remaining, he scored a basket and a three-pointer to give the Hornets their biggest lead; and 4 WHEREAS, with under twenty-five seconds left in the third quarter, Jaylen Hawkins 5 drained a three-pointer from the left wing as the clock expired, sending the Hornets into the 6 fourth quarter with a 40-32 lead; and 7 WHEREAS, with under nine seconds left in the game, Ja'Vonte Smart made two foul 8 shots to lead the Hornets to a 53-52 victory over the Crusaders; and 9 WHEREAS, he scored a game-high fifteen points, had four assists, and was voted 10 the title game Most Valuable Player; and 11 WHEREAS, the distinguished team performance of the entire Scotlandville High 12 School Hornets boys basketball team throughout the regular season and the postseason has 13 earned them the Division I championship title; and 14 WHEREAS, the amazing accomplishments of the team could not have been achieved 15 without the guidance and skills of head coach, Carlos Sample, assistant coaches Jeremy 16 Noah, Joshua Washington, Deshawn Washington, and Melissa Washington, the principal of 17 Scotlandville High School, Tiffany Quiett, as well as all of the other individuals who have 18 contributed to the success of the Scotlandville High School Hornets boys basketball 19 program; and 20 WHEREAS, the members of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana wish to 21 recognize each of the coaches and the extraordinary young men of the Scotlandville High 22 School Hornets boys basketball team on their much deserved championship title which was 23 earned through teamwork, determination, and dedication to the sport of basketball. 24 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 25 does hereby commend and congratulate the players and coaches of the Scotlandville High 26 School Hornets boys basketball team on an impressive and memorable season, and on 27 capturing the 2017 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division I state 28 championship. 29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 30 principal of Scotlandville High School, Tiffany Quiett.
