2017 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 117 BY SENATOR BARROW A RESOLUTION To commend the Scotlandville High School Hornets boys basketball team on becoming the 2017 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division I state champions. WHEREAS, on Saturday, March 11, 2017, the Scotlandville High School Hornets boys basketball team became the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division I state champions at Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles, Louisiana; and WHEREAS, the Scotlandville High School Hornets players Jaylen Hawkins, LaMarq Williams, Malik Williams, Levi Lewis, Shane Jackson, Ja'vonte Smart, Da'vyon Smart, Kelvin Joseph, Reece Beekman, Tai'reon Joseph, David Thomas III, and Jonathan Horton, ended the season with an impressive 53-52 victory over the Brother Martin High School Crusaders to win the state title; and WHEREAS, the first five points of the game were scored by the Hornets, including a three-point shot by Ja'Vonte Smart that opened the scoring eighteen seconds into the game; and WHEREAS, he threaded a pass to Malik Williams, who laid the ball in with under three seconds remaining, giving the Hornets a 14-11 lead after the first period; and WHEREAS, a three-point shot by Jaylen Hawkins and a floater in the lane off an inbound pass by LaMarq Williams assisted in the Hornets' 25-21 lead at the half; and WHEREAS, Malik Williams scored seven points in the third quarter as the tug-of-war between the Hornets and the Crusaders continued, and with just over two minutes remaining, he scored a basket and a three-pointer to give the Hornets their biggest lead; and WHEREAS, with under twenty-five seconds left in the third quarter, Jaylen Hawkins drained a three-pointer from the left wing as the clock expired, sending the Hornets into the fourth quarter with a 40-32 lead; and WHEREAS, with under nine seconds left in the game, Ja'Vonte Smart made two foul shots to lead the Hornets to a 53-52 victory over the Crusaders; and Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 117 ENROLLED WHEREAS, he scored a game-high fifteen points, had four assists, and was voted the title game Most Valuable Player; and WHEREAS, the distinguished team performance of the entire Scotlandville High School Hornets boys basketball team throughout the regular season and the postseason has earned them the Division I championship title; and WHEREAS, the amazing accomplishments of the team could not have been achieved without the guidance and skills of head coach, Carlos Sample, assistant coaches Jeremy Noah, Joshua Washington, Deshawn Washington, and Melissa Washington, the principal of Scotlandville High School, Tiffany Quiett, as well as all of the other individuals who have contributed to the success of the Scotlandville High School Hornets boys basketball program; and WHEREAS, the members of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana wish to recognize each of the coaches and the extraordinary young men of the Scotlandville High School Hornets boys basketball team on their much deserved championship title which was earned through teamwork, determination, and dedication to the sport of basketball. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate the players and coaches of the Scotlandville High School Hornets boys basketball team on an impressive and memorable season, and on capturing the 2017 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division I state championship.
