2017 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 17 BY SENATOR BARROW A RESOLUTION To commend the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center on hosting its tenth annual "Fest for Life" health event on Saturday, April 22, 2017. WHEREAS, the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is Louisiana's leading cancer care organization, caring for more patients each year than any other facility in the Baton Rouge area; and WHEREAS, with strategic hospital and physician partnerships, it is delivering on its mission to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer; and WHEREAS, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and its partners work together to provide state-of-the-art treatments and unparalleled collaborative, comprehensive cancer services to attract the best cancer minds in the country, from expert physicians and highly specialized scientists to forward-thinking leaders in supportive care and other disciplines; and WHEREAS, the first Fest for Life health event was held in 2008 and since that time, four thousand eight hundred people have been screened; and WHEREAS, Louisiana has one of the highest mortality rates in the nation and one in ninety-five adults will be diagnosed with cancer in 2017; and WHEREAS, Louisiana's uninsured rate is twelve and one-half percent greater than the national average of eleven percent; and WHEREAS, Fest for Life is an opportunity to increase awareness regarding the importance of early cancer detection in the Greater Baton Rouge area, especially among disparate populations, and provides five different types of free cancer screenings, including breast, prostate, skin, colorectal, and oral cavity, along with blood pressure and glucose checks. Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 17 ENROLLED THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center on hosting its tenth annual "Fest for Life" health event on Saturday, April 22, 2017.
