2017 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 9 BY SENATOR CLAITOR A RESOLUTION To designate April 17, 2017, as "Kappa Beta Delta Day" at the Senate in recognition of the positive influence of this international honor society for business students at community colleges. WHEREAS, Kappa Beta Delta, known generally as "KBD" is an international honor society for business students in community colleges around the world; and WHEREAS, students at Baton Rouge Community College who are members of KBD are at the top of their class academically in the business department and are leaders of the college and the broader community as well; and WHEREAS, KBD offers its members special training in business and entrepreneurship to better equip them with the tools necessary to be successful in business and other endeavors beyond the academic setting; and WHEREAS, KBD's aim, through this specialized training, is to encourage the best students in the business school to create businesses and grow the economic opportunities in Baton Rouge, and all of Louisiana, making the state more prosperous; and WHEREAS, students who are members of KBD actively participate voluntarily in community projects and activities, raise money and awareness for community-related needs, and seek opportunities to engage with business leaders and stakeholders; and WHEREAS, three specific activities are at the core of what KBD members learn and practice in their college lives: they volunteer with the Big Brothers Big Sisters tutoring program, serve meals at St. Vincent de Paul, and participate in the annual "Lemonade Day", which is an event held around the country with the purpose of teaching kids the power of entrepreneurship; and WHEREAS, another significant activity for KBD is Baton Rouge Entrepreneurship Week or BREW at Baton Rouge Community College, a time when KBD plays a key role in this event held every fall; and Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 9 ENROLLED WHEREAS, during BREW, KBD members and other business students take tours of local businesses and meet with stakeholders and business leaders in an effort to improve the skills required by the craft of business management and entrepreneurship; and WHEREAS, in the spring, KBD members make an annual trip to the Louisiana legislature during session to observe the legislature in action and become familiar with the legislative process, in order to become better advocates for business-friendly legislation; and WHEREAS, KBD believes these visits help their members become better informed voters and greater community contributors; and WHEREAS, KBD alumni have become successful business owners, politicians, managers, and contributing members of the United States military; and WHEREAS, membership in KBD is a positive educational, civic, and business influence, and members are encouraged to become leaders in business, nonprofit enterprises, politics, and the military, making it more likely that these young people will have a positive impact on their community. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate April 17, 2017, as "Kappa Beta Delta Day" in recognition of the positive influence of this international honor society for business students at community colleges. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Kappa Beta Delta chapter at Baton Rouge Community College. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE Page 2 of 2
