2017 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 92 BY SENATOR WALSWORTH A RESOLUTION To designate May 8 through 12, 2017, as Louisiana Charter Schools Week in Louisiana. WHEREAS, charter schools, by law, are independent, tuition-free public schools of choice that are given greater educational and operational autonomy in exchange for the state's highest level of performance-based accountability; and WHEREAS, charter schools increase learning opportunities for all pupils and provide parents and students with expanded choices within the public school system; and WHEREAS, Louisiana has been a responsible partner in improving its public school system to offer a competitive public education; and WHEREAS, a first-class education prepares children to love lifelong learning and develop the skills which enable them to participate in the technologically advanced global economy; and WHEREAS, Louisiana public charter schools have brought forth new ideas, enthusiasm, and strength to its public school system and helped enact one of the top ten strongest charter school laws in the nation; and WHEREAS, in the past twelve years, Louisiana has seen more than an eight-fold increase in the number of operating charter schools and a thirty percent increase over the past two years in the number of students attending those schools resulting in Louisiana now hosting approximately seventy-eight thousand children in its one hundred forty-five public charter schools; and WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana joins the Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools in celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of charter schools to public education; and Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 92 ENROLLED WHEREAS, Louisiana charter schools ensure students have access to a high quality public school education regardless of race, socioeconomic status, academic proficiency, special need, or personal circumstance. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate May 8 through 12, 2017, as Louisiana Charter Schools Week in Louisiana.
