2018 First Extraordinary Session ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 7 BY SENATORS PEACOCK AND GATTI A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To congratulate the officers, physicians, and staff of the Highland Clinic on the occasion of its one hundredth anniversary and to commend them on the extraordinary level of medical care afforded to the Shreveport community. WHEREAS, this unique healthcare facility was the lifelong mission of John A. Hendrick Sr., MD, and in the summer of 1917, Dr. Hendrick and a small band of physicians opened the doors of Highland Clinic Sanatorium to serve the medical needs for both local and rural health care in Shreveport-Bossier; and WHEREAS, in the early 1930s with additional medical services and bed space, the facility became known as the Highland Hospital, and in the 1950s, a small association of ten physicians organized themselves as the Highland Clinic, the name it bears to this day; and WHEREAS, as the regional economy prospered and population grew, so did the Highland Clinic, which today is composed of forty-one physicians and seventeen mid-level providers with numerous medical specialties that include hematology, rheumatology, oncology, urology, orthopaedics, and ophthalmology, with specific care centers for sleep disorders, venous health, cancer treatment, occupational health, diabetes, sports medicine, Page 1 of 3 SCR NO. 7 ENROLLED and pain management; and WHEREAS, with effective leadership and knowledgeable personnel, the Highland Clinic has flourished to become the largest physician-owned, multiple-specialty medical center in the Shreveport-Bossier area; and WHEREAS, with the plethora of exceptional medical facilities in the Ark-La-Tex region, the Highland Clinic maintains a high ranking among outstanding healthcare professionals in its level of expertise, accuracy of diagnoses, and successful methods of treatment; and WHEREAS, the clinic encompasses seventeen specialties and physicians who share a state-of-the-art digital database for medical recordkeeping that interfaces with NextMD, the patients' online communication access, so that patients may be treated in a more holistic manner; and WHEREAS, the Highland Clinic attracts the best and brightest talent in medicine, including notable physicians such as Dr. Charles Knight Sr., who practiced until retirement in 1992 and then served as medical director for another eight years, and Dr. Carl Goodman, who joined the clinic as an orthopaedic spine surgeon and has celebrated his fiftieth year of medical practice; and WHEREAS, the Highland Clinic continues to introduce new services and innovative features for the convenience of its patients; this philosophy has launched new satellite offices in multiple regional markets so that healthcare services can be readily accessible to the people; and WHEREAS, as stewards of the community it serves, the Highland Clinic has launched school supply drives to benefit students in both Caddo and Bossier parishes as a show of gratitude for continued public support throughout the years; and WHEREAS, the Highland Clinic has received many accolades and awards far too numerous to count, and CEO Debbie W. Smith, along with the physicians, medical staff, and employees, is extremely proud of the reputation that the clinic has earned; and WHEREAS, the principles of quality patient care have been at the forefront of the century-long mission of the Highland Clinic, "to offer a level of care to its patients that is equivalent to treatment as if a guest in one's home". Page 2 of 3 SCR NO. 7 ENROLLED THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby congratulate the officers, physicians, and staff of the Highland Clinic on the occasion of its one hundredth anniversary and does hereby commend them for the extraordinary level of medical care provided to the Shreveport community. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Debbie W. Smith, chief executive officer of the Highland Clinic.
