SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 3

A RESOLUTION
To commend the Hubei Provincial Peking Opera Theater for its outstanding achievements
and its recognition of the "Tri Centennial" for New Orleans, Louisiana, and to
designate February 22, 2018, as Hubei Provincial Peking Opera Theater Day at the
state capitol.
WHEREAS, as a "thoroughfare to nine provinces" in Hubei, China, Wuhan has
witnessed the popularity of Peking opera since the 1930s and is known as one of the "Three
Wharves of Peking Opera" and a key city for Peking opera in China; and
WHEREAS, founded in 1970, Hubei Provincial Peking Opera Theater has developed
rapidly and has become the leader of the Peking opera circle in Hubei as well as a culture
brand of Hubei; it was titled "National Key Peking Opera Troupe" by China's Ministry of
Culture in 2005; and
WHEREAS, in the four decades after the foundation of the theater, it has carried
forward the fine tradition of Peking opera; and
WHEREAS, more than two hundred excellent traditional operas have been staged
in this theater, and has been bestowed with many honors, such as the National Wenhua
Award, Award of Association of Chinese Theater Arts, Grand Award of Excellent
Repertoire in China, Golden Award and Silver Award of China Peking Opera Art Festival,
and Award of Top Ten Fine Operas of National Fine Stage Arts Program; and
WHEREAS, the theater boasts of a number of artists with profound attainments, for
example, the famous Peking opera performing artist Zhu Shihui, and the Plum Performance
Award winner Pei Yongjie and Wang Xiaochan, as well as CCTV Young Peking Opera
Actor Contest Gold Medalist Wan Xiaohui, Tan Yuan, Wang Ming, and Tang Kai; and
WHEREAS, the performers of the theater are all professionals of Peking opera,
having been trained for years with the four skills of Peking opera including singing,
dialogue, dancing, and martial arts; and

WHEREAS, singing is utilized to intensify the appeal of the art by all kinds of tones,
and dialogue is the complement of singing which is full of musical and rhythm sensation;
and
WHEREAS, dancing refers to the body movements requiring high-performing skills;
and
WHEREAS, martial arts is the combination and transformation of traditional Chinese
combat exercises with dances; and
WHEREAS, the theater once sent performing groups to many countries and regions,
such as the USA, Russia, Canada, Australia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Malta, and Mauritius.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend the Hubei Provincial Peking Opera Theater for its outstanding
achievements; does hereby recognize and record for posterity its unwavering commitment
to excellence in recognizing and participating in the "Tri Centennial" for New Orleans,
Louisiana, serving the state's citizens; does hereby extend enduring appreciation for the pride
and honor it brings to the state of Louisiana; and does hereby designate Thursday,
February 22, 2018, as Hubei Provincial Peking Opera Theater Day at the state capitol.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Xie Fei with the Chinese Consulate.
