COMMENDATIONS. Commends the "Geaux for the Gold With Purpose" campaign at
Loyola University for working to ensure that children with pediatric cancer have access to
safe and effective treatment options.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To commend the "Geaux for the Gold With Purpose" campaign at Loyola University for
3 working to ensure that children with pediatric cancer have access to safe and
4 effective treatment options.
5 WHEREAS, the With Purpose organization launched in 2014 as an attempt to
6 advance treatment for childhood cancer and is a youth and community-led movement
7 dedicated to ensuring that children living with cancer have access to safe and effective
8 treatment options; and
9 WHEREAS, childhood cancer is the leading cause of death from disease among
10 children in the United States, and one out of five diagnosed with cancer will not survive; and
11 WHEREAS, for many pediatric cancers, there has been little to no advancement for
12 treatment since the 1970s; and
13 WHEREAS, the National Cancer Institute designates approximately four percent of
14 its research budget to all forms of childhood cancer; and
15 WHEREAS, With Purpose supports advocacy and awareness efforts that attempt to
16 persuade the National Cancer Institute to designate a higher percentage of research dollars
17 to childhood cancers; and
18 WHEREAS, too often, promising discovery research for childhood cancer is

1 published but does not result in clinical trials or new treatments for children actually fighting
2 the disease; and
3 WHEREAS, With Purpose supports several organizations, including the Children's
4 Cancer Therapy Development Institute, a nonprofit biotech company that translates
5 discovery research into real clinical trials and, in the near future, life-saving treatments; and
6 WHEREAS, With Purpose also supports Kids V Cancer, a groundbreaking
7 organization that pioneered the Creating Hope Act, a priority voucher program that has
8 resulted in almost one billion dollars in incentives for companies that develop drugs for kids
9 with cancer and other life-threatening diseases; and
10 WHEREAS, students at Loyola University in New Orleans are currently working on
11 the Geaux for the Gold With Purpose campaign which encourages students to stand up to
12 childhood cancer; and
13 WHEREAS, access to safe and effective cancer treatment options for the smallest
14 and most vulnerable citizens in Louisiana is a worthwhile cause, and support from the
15 community plays a vital role in eradicating cancer from the lives of children.
16 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
17 does hereby commend the Geaux for the Gold With Purpose campaign at Loyola University
18 for working to ensure that children with pediatric cancer have access to safe and effective
19 treatment options.
20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
21 Geaux for the Gold With Purpose campaign at Loyola University.
