Present law provides for membership on the La. State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME).
Proposed law increases the number of members from seven to nine.  Present law provides for the
appointment of one board member from a list of names submitted by the LSU Health Sciences
Center at New Orleans.
Proposed law retains present law and that an additional provides that member be appointed from a
list of names submitted by the LSU Health Sciences Center at Shreveport.
Proposed law further provides that a non-physician member be appointed from a list of names
submitted by the chairmen of the senate and house committees on health and welfare.
Present law provides relative to investigations by the LSBME. Present law provides for the
procedure and causes for refusal to issue or revocation of any license or permit under its authority.
Proposed law provides that no proceeding for disciplinary action may commence prior to receipt by
the board of a complaint as provided for in present law.
Effective August 1, 2018.

Summary of Amendments Adopted by Senate
Committee Amendments Proposed by Senate Committee on Health and Welfare to the
original bill
1. Replaces the physician member appointed to the board from a list of names
submitted by Tulane Medical School with a non-physician member appointed from
a list of names submitted by the chairmen of the senate and house committees on
health and welfare and limits that appointment to a one- year term. 
Senate Floor Amendments to engrossed bill
1. Increases LSBME membership from seven to nine. 2. Adds one member appointed from a list of names submitted by the LSU Health
Sciences Center at Shreveport.
3. Removes provision that the non-physician member serve only one term.
