SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 108
BY SENATOR BISHOP 
A RESOLUTION
To commend the LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry for receiving the 2018 Gies
Award for Vision in Academic Dental Institutions.
WHEREAS, the Gies Award, named after William J. Gies, PhD, honors individuals
and organizations that exemplify the highest standards in oral health and dental education,
research, and leadership; and
WHEREAS, in 2012 the School of Dentistry at LSU Health New Orleans undertook
a self-initiated program to improve Interprofessional Education (IPE) university-wide
through the development of Team Up: Commit to Compassion, Communication, and
Collaboration, a two-year longitudinal experience integrated within the curriculum of all six
LSU Health schools for all first- and second-year students; and
WHEREAS, interprofessional education refers to occasions when students of two or
more professions learn about, from, and with each other to enable effective collaboration and
improve health outcomes; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sandra Carlin Andrieu, LSU School of Dentistry Associate Dean
for Academic Affairs, was instrumental in establishing, promoting, and stabilizing the LSU
Health New Orleans Center for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice
(CIPECP) along with the CIPECP Chair, Dr. Tina P. Gunaldo; and
WHEREAS, during the 2017-18 academic year, LSU Health New Orleans Center for
Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice included 700 first-year students from
19 academic programs in interprofessional education, with this number growing to 1,500
first- and second-year students and 27 academic programs in the 2018-19 academic year; and
WHEREAS, the primary goal of the LSU Health New Orleans Center for
Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice is to enable students to enter the
workplace as a member of a collaborative practice team and to increase future collaboration
among various health professionals, with the ultimate goal of improving health outcomes for
all patients; and

WHEREAS, the LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry was awarded the
2018 Gies Award for Vision in Academic Dental Institutions on March 19, 2018, for its
development and commitment to interprofessional education.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend the LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry, as well as its
faculty, staff, and students for being awarded the 2018 Gies Award for Vision in Academic
Dental Institutions, a well-deserved recognition. 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Dr. Henry Gremillion, Dean of the LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry.
