HLS 19RS-1185 ORIGINAL 2019 Regular Session HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 35 BY REPRESENTATIVE SMITH COMMENDATIONS: Commends Dr. Jinx Coleman Broussard for her accomplishments and service to Louisiana State University Manship School of Mass Communication 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2To commend Dr. Jinx Coleman Broussard for her many accomplishments and her service 3 to Louisiana State University Manship School of Mass Communication. 4 WHEREAS, Dr. Jinx Coleman Broussard, professor at Louisiana State University 5Manship School of Mass Communication, was selected by the Association for Education in 6Journalism and Mass Communication and the Scripps-Howard Foundation as the top mass 7communication professor in the nation; the Association for Education in Journalism and 8Mass Communication is the accrediting body for mass communication programs and has 9ranked Manship School of Mass Communication among the strongest programs in the 10country; and 11 WHEREAS, Dr. Broussard serves as the distinguished Bart R. Swanson Endowed 12Memorial Professor at Manship School of Mass Communication; before taking the chair at 13Manship School of Mass Communication, Dr. Broussard was director of public information 14for the city of New Orleans and press secretary to Mayor Sidney J. Barthelemy in New 15Orleans; and 16 WHEREAS, public relations campaigns produced by Dr. Broussard's students at 17Manship School of Mass Communication have captured media attention and won two first 18place and one second place national awards since 2014; Dr. Broussard has achieved 19recognition for her commitment to Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency, one of the entities 20for which her students have created a successful public relations campaign; and Page 1 of 2 HLS 19RS-1185 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 35 1 WHEREAS, Dr. Broussard is recognized by her undergraduate students for her 2strong commitment to their success and has mentored many graduate students; and 3 WHEREAS, among Dr. Broussard's award-winning academic papers are essays on 4the black press, representations of racial and ethnic minorities, media history, alternative 5media, crisis communication, public relations strategies and tactics, and the civil rights 6movement; Dr. Broussard's Ph.D. dissertation was "Lifting the Veil on Obscurity: Four 7Pioneering Black Women Journalists: 1890-1950"; she also wrote African American Foreign 8Correspondents: A History, published in 2013. 9 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 10commend and congratulate Dr. Jinx Coleman Broussard upon her recognition as the top 11mass communication professor in the nation by the Association for Education in Journalism 12and Mass Communication and the Scripps-Howard Foundation. 13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 14recognize the outstanding mentorship of Dr. Jinx Coleman Broussard to her students and 15commitment to her community and does hereby extend best wishes for her continued success 16at Louisiana State University Manship School of Mass Communication. 17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted 18to Dr. Jinx Coleman Broussard.
