HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 6
BY REPRESENTATIVE DUSTIN MILLER
A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To recognize April 10, 2019, as Louisiana Nurse Day at the state capitol and May 6-12,
2019, as National Nurses Week in Louisiana.
WHEREAS, registered nurses are at the front lines of patient care and are the largest
segment of the healthcare workforce in Louisiana and nationally; and
WHEREAS, registered nurses provide health care to culturally diverse populations
of all ages, with any illness, in all healthcare settings to people of all income levels; and
WHEREAS, the cost-effective, safe, and high-quality health services provided by
registered nurses will be an increasingly important component of our nation's healthcare
delivery system in the future; and
WHEREAS, the essential role of the registered nurse in care coordination improves
patient-care quality, safety, satisfaction, and outcomes and decreases costs across patient
populations and healthcare settings; and
WHEREAS, the demand for registered nursing services will be greater than ever in
the future because of the aging of the American population, the continuing expansion of
life-sustaining technologies, and the explosive growth of healthcare services beyond the
hospital setting; and
WHEREAS, more qualified registered nurses will be needed to meet the increasingly
complex needs of healthcare consumers in this community, which requires a sufficient
number of qualified nursing faculty; and
WHEREAS, registered nursing has outranked other professions for the past
seventeen years as the most trusted profession, maintains ethical standards of practice, and
advocates steadfastly for patient well-being; and

WHEREAS, registered nurses have the experience and expertise in health services
delivery to provide input and perspective on issues impacting the health care of Louisiana
citizens; and
WHEREAS, the Louisiana State Nurses Association, as the voice for registered
nurses in this state, fosters high standards for professional nursing practice for all registered
nurses regardless of education level, clinical specialty, or work setting, and advocates for
quality health care for the citizens of Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, along with the American Nurses Association, the Louisiana State
Nurses Association has declared the week of May 6-12 as National Nurses Week, with the
theme "4 Million Reasons to Celebrate", in recognition of the vast contributions and positive
impact of America's four million registered nurses, including the sixty-six thousand
registered nurses licensed in Louisiana.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
recognize April 10, 2019, as Louisiana Nurse Day at the state capitol and May 6-12, 2019,
as National Nurses Week in Louisiana and encourage all residents of Louisiana to join
together in honoring the registered nurses who provide quality care for all of us and who
work to improve our healthcare system daily.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the legislature does hereby call for the boards
and commissions of this state to recognize registered nurses as a valuable resource for
inclusion at all levels where health policy decisions are made.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the executive director of the Louisiana State Nurses Association.
