ENROLLED 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 118 BY REPRESENTATIVE GAROFALO A RESOLUTION To commend the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for its scientific and technological contributions to the state of Louisiana and the United States of America and to designate Wednesday, May 8, 2019, as NASA Day at the state capitol. WHEREAS, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center and Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, where the Saturn rockets for the Apollo program and the external tanks for the space shuttle program were manufactured, have been instrumental in the success of the U.S. space program for sixty years; and WHEREAS, NASA is celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing; and WHEREAS, the Marshall Space Flight Center and Michoud Assembly Facility are building the Space Launch System (SLS), which will feature the most powerful rocket ever built and will enable human exploration of the moon and future missions to deep space with an eye towards Mars, thus further consolidating America's role as the leader in space exploration; and WHEREAS, NASA and the state of Louisiana share a commitment to promoting the growth of a well-trained aerospace workforce and to sustaining world-class manufacturing capabilities such as those at the Michoud Assembly Facility, where NASA is building the SLS and Orion Multipurpose Crew Vehicle, both of which will usher in a new era of exploration and discovery beyond Earth's orbit; and WHEREAS, within the last year, the Marshall Space Center and Michoud Assembly Facility have facilitated the signing of 66 partnership agreements with a value exceeding $23.7 million in areas such as engine development, materials testing, wind tunnel testing, Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 118 ENROLLED and other engineering services, while also managing 281 Space Act Agreements with industry, academia, and other government agencies; and WHEREAS, even as it continues NASA's proud heritage of groundbreaking advancements in human space exploration, the Michoud Assembly Facility locally supports more than five thousand jobs, generates $630 million in economic impact, and has obtained $116 million in government contracts; and WHEREAS, the citizens of the state of Louisiana are exceedingly proud of the state's critical role in the American space program and of the tremendous advances in space exploration and scientific progress its cooperation with NASA has produced. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate Wednesday, May 8, 2019, as NASA Day at the state capitol and does hereby commend NASA for its remarkable scientific and technological contributions to the state of Louisiana and the United States of America.
