HLS 19RS-2671 ORIGINAL 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 166 BY REPRESENTATIVE NANCY LANDRY SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Recognizes May 12-18, 2019, as Louisiana Charter Schools Week at the state capitol 1 A RESOLUTION 2To recognize May 12-18, 2019, as Louisiana Charter Schools Week at the state capitol. 3 WHEREAS, charter schools are public schools that increase learning opportunities 4for students and that provide parents, students, and teachers expanded choice within the 5public school system; and 6 WHEREAS, in Louisiana, there are one hundred fifty-six charter schools in 7operation; and 8 WHEREAS, charter schools have a combined enrollment of more than 80,000 9students in schools operating throughout Louisiana; and 10 WHEREAS, in 1995, the Legislature of Louisiana passed the Charter School 11Demonstration Programs Law; and 12 WHEREAS, charter schools offer models of innovation in academics, operations, 13financial structure, and governance; and 14 WHEREAS, charter schools have made dramatic gains in helping students of 15underserved populations increase their graduation rates and prepare for college; and 16 WHEREAS, charter schools offer a variety of educational missions, including 17foreign language instruction; and 18 WHEREAS, charter schools play an integral role in Louisiana's education system, 19the communities in which they operate, the families that they serve, and the student's lives 20that they impact; and Page 1 of 2 HLS 19RS-2671 ORIGINAL HR NO. 166 1 WHEREAS, by providing high-quality education to students, charter schools 2contribute to the statewide effort to improve the educational system in Louisiana; and 3 WHEREAS, charter schools encourage communal and parental involvement in the 4education of the state's youth; and 5 WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana joins the Louisiana Association of Public Charter 6Schools in celebrating the manifold contributions of charter schools to the public education 7system in Louisiana. 8 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 9Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize May 12-18, 2019, as Louisiana Charter 10Schools Week at the state capitol.
