ENROLLED 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 166 BY REPRESENTATIVE NANCY LANDRY A RESOLUTION To recognize May 12-18, 2019, as Louisiana Charter Schools Week at the state capitol. WHEREAS, charter schools are public schools that increase learning opportunities for students and that provide parents, students, and teachers expanded choice within the public school system; and WHEREAS, in Louisiana, there are one hundred fifty-six charter schools in operation; and WHEREAS, charter schools have a combined enrollment of more than 80,000 students in schools operating throughout Louisiana; and WHEREAS, in 1995, the Legislature of Louisiana passed the Charter School Demonstration Programs Law; and WHEREAS, charter schools offer models of innovation in academics, operations, financial structure, and governance; and WHEREAS, charter schools have made dramatic gains in helping students of underserved populations increase their graduation rates and prepare for college; and WHEREAS, charter schools offer a variety of educational missions, including foreign language instruction; and WHEREAS, charter schools play an integral role in Louisiana's education system, the communities in which they operate, the families that they serve, and the student's lives that they impact; and WHEREAS, by providing high-quality education to students, charter schools contribute to the statewide effort to improve the educational system in Louisiana; and Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 166 ENROLLED WHEREAS, charter schools encourage communal and parental involvement in the education of the state's youth; and WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana joins the Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools in celebrating the manifold contributions of charter schools to the public education system in Louisiana. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize May 12-18, 2019, as Louisiana Charter Schools Week at the state capitol.
