COMMENDATIONS: Commends the St. Augustine High School, class of 1969, on its
fifty-year class reunion.
1 A RESOLUTION
2To commend the St. Augustine High School, class of 1969, on its fifty-year class reunion.
3 WHEREAS, on October 31 through November 3, 2019, the former students of St.
4Augustine High School will celebrate their fifty-year high school class reunion in New
5Orleans, and it is appropriate to welcome them back home and to wish them a blessed, safe,
6and joyous reunion; and
7 WHEREAS, St. Augustine High School was founded in 1951 by the Society of St.
8Joseph of the Sacred Heart through the Youth Progress Program of the Archdiocese of New
9Orleans; and
10 WHEREAS, St. Augustine High School is the training ground for leadership through
11academic excellence, moral values, Christian responsibility, and reasonable, consistent
12discipline; and
13 WHEREAS, the goals of St. Augustine High School are to open its doors to young
14men, especially the economically disadvantaged, who are willing to strive for excellence and
15to develop each individual to the fullness of his own unique capacity; and
16 WHEREAS, St. Augustine High School has always been focused on fostering
17Christian values based on the sacred scriptures and Roman Catholic tradition, and providing
18each student with educational opportunities and experiences related to his African American
19heritage and his American citizenship; and
20 WHEREAS, it is vitally important to instill in each student the responsibilities of
21leadership in family, church, community, and society-at-large; and

1 WHEREAS, with the Josephites leading the charge on the school's construction,
2oversight, and administration, St. Augustine has made history as a prominent academic
3institution and driver of civic leadership in New Orleans and the South; and
4 WHEREAS, in 1967, St. Augustine won a legal battle, which led to the desegregation
5of Louisiana high school sports and to the school's admittance into the Louisiana High
6School Athletic Association; and
7 WHEREAS, St. Augustine's early alumni blazed trails in collegiate atmospheres
8where African Americans were once excluded; and
9 WHEREAS, today, while St. Augustine now welcomes students of any national or
10ethnic background, it remains the leading secondary school for black males in Louisiana and
11is nationally recognized in educational circles for outstanding success in preparing its
12students for higher education.
13 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
14Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate the St. Augustine High
15School, class of 1969, on its fifty-year class reunion and does hereby express best wishes for
16a joyous gathering of which the bonds of old friendships are renewed and strengthened.
17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
18president of St. Augustine High School and the president of St. Augustine High School
19Alumni Association.
