ENROLLED 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 213 BY REPRESENTATIVE JIMMY HARRIS A RESOLUTION To commend the St. Augustine High School, class of 1969, on its fifty-year class reunion. WHEREAS, on October 31 through November 3, 2019, the former students of St. Augustine High School will celebrate their fifty-year high school class reunion in New Orleans, and it is appropriate to welcome them back home and to wish them a blessed, safe, and joyous reunion; and WHEREAS, St. Augustine High School was founded in 1951 by the Society of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart through the Youth Progress Program of the Archdiocese of New Orleans; and WHEREAS, St. Augustine High School is the training ground for leadership through academic excellence, moral values, Christian responsibility, and reasonable, consistent discipline; and WHEREAS, the goals of St. Augustine High School are to open its doors to young men, especially the economically disadvantaged, who are willing to strive for excellence and to develop each individual to the fullness of his own unique capacity; and WHEREAS, St. Augustine High School has always been focused on fostering Christian values based on the sacred scriptures and Roman Catholic tradition, and providing each student with educational opportunities and experiences related to his African American heritage and his American citizenship; and WHEREAS, it is vitally important to instill in each student the responsibilities of leadership in family, church, community, and society-at-large; and WHEREAS, with the Josephites leading the charge on the school's construction, oversight, and administration, St. Augustine has made history as a prominent academic institution and driver of civic leadership in New Orleans and the South; and Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 213 ENROLLED WHEREAS, in 1967, St. Augustine won a legal battle, which led to the desegregation of Louisiana high school sports and to the school's admittance into the Louisiana High School Athletic Association; and WHEREAS, St. Augustine's early alumni blazed trails in collegiate atmospheres where African Americans were once excluded; and WHEREAS, today, while St. Augustine now welcomes students of any national or ethnic background, it remains the leading secondary school for black males in Louisiana and is nationally recognized in educational circles for outstanding success in preparing its students for higher education. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate the St. Augustine High School, class of 1969, on its fifty-year class reunion and does hereby express best wishes for a joyous gathering of which the bonds of old friendships are renewed and strengthened. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the president of St. Augustine High School and the president of St. Augustine High School Alumni Association.
