COMMENDATIONS: Commends the St. Augustine High School, class of 1989, on its
thirty-year class reunion
1 A RESOLUTION
2To commend the St. Augustine High School alumni class of 1989 on its thirtieth
3 anniversary.
4 WHEREAS, on October 31 through November 3, 2019, the former students of St.
5Augustine High School will celebrate their thirty-year high school class reunion in New
6Orleans, and it is appropriate to welcome them back home and to wish them a blessed, safe,
7and joyous reunion; and
8 WHEREAS, St. Augustine High School was founded in 1951 by the Society of St.
9Joseph of the Sacred Heart through the Youth Progress Program of the Archdiocese of New
10Orleans; and
11 WHEREAS, St. Augustine High School is the training ground for leadership through
12academic excellence, moral values, Christian responsibility, and reasonable, consistent
13discipline; and
14 WHEREAS, the goals of St. Augustine High School are to open its doors to young
15men, especially the economically disadvantaged, who are willing to strive for excellence and
16to develop each individual to the fullness of his own unique capacity; and
17 WHEREAS, St. Augustine High School has always been focused on fostering
18Christian values based on the sacred scriptures and Roman Catholic tradition, and providing
19each student with educational opportunities and experiences related to his African American
20heritage and his American citizenship; and

1 WHEREAS, it is vitally important to instill in each student the responsibilities of
2leadership in family, church, community, and society-at-large; and
3 WHEREAS, with the Josephites leading the charge on the school's construction,
4oversight, and administration, St. Augustine has made history as a prominent academic
5institution and driver of civic leadership in New Orleans and the South; and
6 WHEREAS, in 1967, St. Augustine won a legal battle, which led to the desegregation
7of Louisiana high school sports and to the school's admittance into the Louisiana High
8School Athletic Association; and
9 WHEREAS, St. Augustine's early alumni blazed trails in collegiate atmospheres
10where African Americans were once excluded; and
11 WHEREAS, today, while St. Augustine now welcomes students of any national or
12ethnic background, it remains the leading secondary school for black males in Louisiana and
13is nationally recognized in educational circles for outstanding success in preparing its
14students for higher education.
15 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
16Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate the St. Augustine High
17School, class of 1989, on its thirty-year class reunion and does hereby express best wishes
18for a joyous gathering of which the bonds of old friendships are renewed and strengthened.
19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
20president of St. Augustine High School and the president of St. Augustine High School
21Alumni Association.
