HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 235
BY REPRESENTATIVE WHITE
A RESOLUTION
To commend the organizers and volunteers of the 2019 Washington Parish Juneteenth
Celebration.
WHEREAS, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People of
Washington Parish is organizing an event in celebration of Juneteenth, to be held on
Saturday, June 15, 2019, in Cassidy Park in Bogalusa; and
WHEREAS, Juneteenth is an annual observance and celebration of the end of slavery
in the United States; and
WHEREAS, on June 19, 1865, Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon
Granger, landed in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the war had ended and the enslaved
were now free; and 
WHEREAS, the day has been celebrated as the day African Americans received the
news of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation; and
WHEREAS, the slogan of this year's ceremony in Bogalusa is "Strength in our past,
faith in our future"; and
WHEREAS, the festival will include a car show, a parade, live entertainment, and
vendors; and
WHEREAS, special guests will be Tea J. Moore honoring Kelvin Carter and Oneal
Moore; the commemoration will be in memory of Rev. Ronald V. Myers, Sr., M.D.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize the Juneteenth celebration in Bogalusa
sponsored by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People of
Washington Parish and does hereby commend all volunteers and organizers involved in
bringing this stellar celebration to fruition.

organizers of the Washington Parish Juneteenth celebration.
