HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 48
BY REPRESENTATIVE CARPENTER
A RESOLUTION
To commend Leroy J. Poydras on his ninety-eighth birthday and to recognize his military
service to the country during World War II.
WHEREAS, Leroy J. Poydras was born in Lafayette on February 21, 1921; and
WHEREAS, he served his country honorably during World War II; and
WHEREAS, he began his career in the United States Navy on September 9, 1940, 
and served until September 15, 1946; and
WHEREAS, during his tour of duty, he was deployed to Guantanamo Bay and Puerto
Rico; he also participated in the British occupation of Iceland during Operation Fork; as a
sailor throughout the period of the United States's involvement in World War II, Mr. Poydras
served aboard numerous ships, including the historic battleships USS New York and USS
Texas; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Poydras has been recognized for his courageous leadership and has
received many awards and citations for his service in the navy, including the WWII Victory
Medal and the American Defense Service Medal; he personifies the ideals of the "greatest
generation"; and
WHEREAS, over the span of his career in the United States Navy, Leroy J. Poydras
earned a reputation as an outstanding soldier, a superb leader, and a courageous warrior; and
WHEREAS, after his service, Mr. Poydras moved to Baton Rouge and attended
Southern University where he earned a master's degree; and
WHEREAS, he met and married the love of his life, Elsie Poydras; of their union,
three children were born; they have been married for fifty-six years; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Poydras was a long-time teacher and educator; he worked at Baker
High School and Scotlandville High School, where he taught science and math; he was
involved with the Scotlandville basketball team and track team; and

WHEREAS, he is a dedicated follower of Christ and has been a member of
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Scotlandville for over fifty years where he sang
in the choir; and
WHEREAS, he attributes his longevity to avoiding alcohol, tobacco, preservatives,
and microwaved food.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend  Leroy J. Poydras on the occasion of his
ninety-eighth birthday, for his honorable service to his country in the United States Navy
during World War II and for his service to his community, and does hereby recognize the
pride and honor that this extraordinary gentleman brings to his family and friends and to the
state of Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Leroy J. Poydras.
