ENROLLED 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 51 BY REPRESENTATIVE SMITH A RESOLUTION To commend United States Senator Kamala Harris upon the occasion of her visit to the great state of Louisiana. WHEREAS, as a globally-impactful organization, Alpha Kappa Alpha demonstrates an appreciation for individuals who serve others, especially African American women such as Senator Kamala Harris; Kamala Harris deserves recognition for speaking at the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, 87th South Central Regional Conference in New Orleans on Friday, April 19, 2019; and WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, which has the distinction of being the first Greek-letter sorority established by African American college women, was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1908; and WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's unending quest to be "Supreme in Service to All Mankind" spans across domestic and international boundaries through the service of members of more than one thousand chapters around the world; and WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana hosts thirty-seven of these chapters on college and university campuses and active alumnae groups throughout the state; Senator Harris is a welcome and distinguished visitor to the state of Louisiana and to the Alpha Kappa Alpha conference; and WHEREAS, born in Oakland, California, Kamala Harris is a graduate of Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law; and WHEREAS, throughout her career, Senator Harris has been a fearless advocate for the voiceless and vulnerable and a vocal and determined fighter for all people; and WHEREAS, when she was sworn into office in 2017, Senator Harris became the second African American woman and first South Asian American senator in American history; she has introduced and co-sponsored many important pieces of legislation; and Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 51 ENROLLED WHEREAS, prior to serving in the Senate, Kamala completed two terms as the district attorney of the city and county of San Francisco; in 2010, she was elected as the first African American and first woman to serve as California's attorney general; and WHEREAS, it is with great joy that the citizens of Louisiana welcome Senator Harris to the state and celebrate this occasion. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend United States Senator Kamala Harris upon the occasion of her visit to the great state of Louisiana; does hereby express appreciation for her presence at the 87th South Central Regional Conference of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, in New Orleans; and does hereby recognize the contributions she has made to the state of California and the United States.
