2019 Regular Session
HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 60
REPRESENTATIVE CARPENTER
A RESOLUTION
To designate April 23, 2019, as Zeta Phi Beta Day at the state capitol.
WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, was founded on January 16, 1920,
at Howard University in Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, the five coeds who founded the sorority believed that sorority elitism
and an emphasis on socializing had previously prevented sororities from pursuing a
progressive agenda that fully addressed the societal mores, ills, prejudices, and poverty
affecting humanity in general and the black community in particular; and
WHEREAS, in contrast, the founders of Zeta Phi Beta sought to create a sorority that
would directly affect positive change, chart a course of action for the 1920s and beyond,
raise the consciousness of the African American people, encourage the highest standards of
scholastic achievement, and foster a greater sense of unity among its members; and
WHEREAS, since its inception, Zeta Phi Beta has continued its steady climb into the
national spotlight with programs designed to assist human beings at both the national and
international level; and
WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta was the first National Pan-Hellenic Council organization
to centralize its operation in a national headquarters, the first to charter a chapter in Africa,
the first to form auxiliary groups, and the first to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity,
namely Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated; and
WHEREAS, the sorority takes pride in its continued service to communities through
volunteer services from members of the sorority and its auxiliary groups; and
WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta has chartered hundreds of chapters worldwide and has
more than 100,000 members; and
WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta's local and national programs include its National
Education Foundation outreach services; and

WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta chapters and auxiliaries have given myriad hours of
volunteer service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized
charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change; and
WHEREAS, as the sorority moves towards its centennial, it retains its original zest
for excellence and espouses the highest academic ideals, all of which has resulted in its
members serving in groundbreaking roles in all fields of endeavor; and
WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is poised for perpetual service to mankind
into its second century and beyond.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Tuesday, April 23, 2019, as Zeta Phi Beta
Day at the state capitol, and hereby expresses enduring appreciation to the members of Zeta
