ENROLLED 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 74 REPRESENTATIVE JAMES A RESOLUTION To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the death of Melvin "Coach" Stringer. WHEREAS, the members of the House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death on April 19, 2019, of Melvin "Coach" Stringer, at the age of eighty-six; and WHEREAS, born in Baton Rouge to parents Arthur and Thelma Neldare, Melvin graduated from Southern University Lab School in 1953; and WHEREAS, Melvin answered the call of duty to his country and served in the Korean War from 1953-1955; and WHEREAS, he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in secondary education from Southern University; and WHEREAS, a passionate teacher, Melvin accepted employment at Scotlandville Senior High School and later Baker High School, where he taught social studies, driver's education, and coached track and field teams; and WHEREAS, under the tutelage of Coach Stringer, the teams would go on to win several awards for high achievement; and WHEREAS, he was a member of The American Legion Post 502 in Scotlandville, Southern University Track and Field Association, and Louisiana State University Track and Field Association; and WHEREAS, those who will forever cherish his memory are sons, Theadrick Stringer and Keith Phillips; daughter, Rhonda Randall; sisters, Ardra Neldare and Adrian Neldare Mayes; seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and a host of extended family, students, and friends. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express their deepest sympathy and most sincere condolences on the death of Melvin "Coach" Stringer; does hereby acknowledge his life's Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 74 ENROLLED work with the youth of East Baton Rouge Parish in schools and recreation; and does hereby extend best prayers and hopes for peace and comfort to those who remain.
