ENROLLED 2019 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 80 BY REPRESENTATIVE JEFFERSON A RESOLUTION To commend Louisiana Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) and to designate Thursday, May 2, 2019, as GEAR UP Day at the state capitol. WHEREAS, Louisiana GEAR UP delivers support to low income, minority, and disadvantaged students who may be the first in their families to attend college; and WHEREAS, Louisiana GEAR UP is sustained by public and private partnerships, enlisting the powerful resources of government, business, and community to support students as they prepare to enter and succeed in college; and WHEREAS, Louisiana GEAR UP is administered by the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance, a program of the Board of Regents, and has supported over twenty- three thousand Louisiana students in seventy-five schools located in twenty-two districts throughout the state; and WHEREAS, Louisiana GEAR UP offers students college and career readiness interventions such as tutoring, mentoring, financial literacy, campus trips, and peer leadership clubs; Louisiana GEAR UP currently serves more than eleven thousand middle and high school students in more than sixteen schools and fifteen parishes; and WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize Thursday, May 2, 2019, as GEAR UP Day at the state capitol and to welcome the outstanding students from Louisiana GEAR UP as they share how this exceptional program has impacted them and over twenty-three thousand other students. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the exceptional efforts of Louisiana Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, a program that delivers Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 80 ENROLLED support to thousands of students and does hereby designate Thursday, May 2, 2019, as GEAR UP Day at the state capitol.
