To commend the service and contributions of first responders in Louisiana and designate
April 30, 2019, as First Responders Appreciation Day at the Louisiana State Capitol.
WHEREAS, first responders generally include professional and volunteer fire
fighters and police officers, emergency medical services personnel, and public health
officials; and
WHEREAS, this core group is augmented by local and state emergency management
workers, support agencies, community organizations, and many more volunteers who work
collectively to support the frontline responders in their efforts as well as to respond to the
needs of those in harm's way; and
WHEREAS, together they form a vital pillar of our communities and play a critical
role in saving lives and in protecting and ensuring public safety, especially in times of tragic
and rapidly evolving events; and
WHEREAS, in performing their services, the collective first responders are regularly
called to work devotedly and selflessly for the benefit of others, regardless of the peril or
hazard to themselves or their personal property; and
WHEREAS, many hours of education, training, and dedication are required to
develop the expertise necessary to respond at a moment's notice and to work the frontline
of a multitude of emergency situations; and
WHEREAS, despite the best preparation, far too often responding to an emergency
situation has resulted in a first responder making the ultimate sacrifice; and

WHEREAS, whether assisting an individual in a particular emergency situation or
a number of individuals suffering from the aftermath of a mass terrorist attack or other acts
of violence, or a natural disaster, it is the heroic work of the group of first responders
working together that swings the progression of the event toward resolution and saves lives
and property; and
WHEREAS, first responders deserve recognition for their courageous work and the
personal risks they take on to protect our communities, and they should be honored for the
contributions they make to our quality of life and overall sense of security.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana hereby
commends the service and contributions of all first responders in Louisiana and designates
