SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH. Designates Tuesday, April 16, 2019, as LSU Day at the
Legislature.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To designate Tuesday, April 16, 2019, as LSU Day at the Legislature and commend
3 Louisiana State University on its contributions.
4 WHEREAS, Louisiana State University (LSU), through its campuses and extension
5 offices, is the most comprehensive education system in the state, with a public mission
6 focused on education, research, and outreach; and
7 WHEREAS, there are 48,000 students enrolled across the campuses and learning at
8 all levels, from certificates to the doctoral level; and
9 WHEREAS, LSU offers a comprehensive education in a broad number of fields
10 including agriculture, humanities, physical sciences, music, medicine, nursing, allied health,
11 engineering, veterinary medicine, social sciences, education, dentistry, law, business
12 administration, and public administration; and
13 WHEREAS, LSU holds a research portfolio valued at $1.1 billion and collaborates
14 with more than 100 universities and 450 industry partners around the world; and LSU
15 researchers across Louisiana are working on developing a wide-range of innovations to
16 improve quality of life for Louisiana and for citizens nationwide by studying issues such as
17 disease management, advanced medical treatments, obesity, coastal protection, hurricane
18 preparedness, energy, natural resource management, and agriculture; and

1 WHEREAS, LSU has 51% of the certified Centers of Excellence in the state; and
2 WHEREAS, LSU employs faculty who are excellent, world renowned
3 teacher-scholars who are nationally competitive in research and creative activities and
4 outlets, and who contribute greatly to a world-class knowledge base that is transferable to
5 educational, professional, cultural, and economic enterprise, and use their extensive talent
6 and resources to solve economic, environmental, and social challenges; and
7 WHEREAS, Forbes ranks LSU among the Top 20 national universities that dominate
8 in both academics and athletics; and
9 WHEREAS, LSU has engaged in a capital campaign titled "Fierce for the Future"
10 with the goal of raising $1.5 billion to support the teaching, research, and outreach missions
11 of the campuses; and
12 WHEREAS, the generosity of the citizens of Louisiana as well as nationally have
13 contributed to the support of Louisiana State University, and LSU has in turn provided
14 quality education, basic and applied research, new and state of the art discoveries in all
15 fields, numerous hours of volunteerism, and valuable public service; and
16 WHEREAS, LSU is Louisiana's most important economic asset, contributing over
17 $5.1 billion in total Louisiana sales, providing an estimated 41,000 jobs to communities and
18 over $1.9 billion in new statewide earnings; demonstrating that for every dollar provided by
19 the state, LSU provides a $13.25 return of economic activity; and
20 WHEREAS, LSU, as the nation's smartest investment, consistently ranks as one of
21 the country's top values by Kiplinger, Forbes, Money, SmartAsset, and PayScale; and
22 WHEREAS, LSU remains one of the greatest investments for Louisiana, one focused
23 only on improving the quality of life for Louisiana's citizens.
24 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
25 hereby designates April 16, 2019, as LSU Day at the Legislature, commends Louisiana State
26 University on its contributions, and wishes it well on its endeavors.
