SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 41

COMMENDATIONS. Commends Leroy J. Poydras for his military service during World
War II and upon reaching the milestone of 98 years.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To commend Leroy J. Poydras for his military service during World War II and to
3 congratulate him upon reaching the milestone of ninety-eight years.
4 WHEREAS, Leroy J. Poydras, a longtime resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana,
5 recently celebrated his ninety-eighth birthday; and
6 WHEREAS, Mr. Poydras is well known in the Baton Rouge community for his work
7 in several local businesses, and as a teacher and educator for many years, including teaching
8 at Scotlandville High School; and
9 WHEREAS, Mr. Poydras served in the United States Navy from September, 1940,
10 until September, 1946, which included deployments on the USS New York on
11 November 19, 1940, to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; USS Texas on January 21, 1941, to
12 Mayaguez, Puerto Rico; USS PC 485, USS PC 597, USS Okanogan, and USS Florence
13 Nightingale; and
14 WHEREAS, he also served in Iceland in 1941 for the British Occupation of Iceland
15 during Operation Fork, and received the World War II Victory Medal and American Defense
16 Service Medal in recognition of his service in the United States military; and
17 WHEREAS, in addition to his many achievements, Mr. Poydras is a deeply beloved
18 member of the Baton Rouge community who has earned the respect and admiration of the

1 countless citizens whose lives he has touched; and
2 WHEREAS, Leroy J. Poydras, one of Louisiana's finest sons, merits a special
3 measure of commendation for his achievements as a veteran and an educator, and in
4 celebration of his ninety-eighth birthday.
5 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
6 does hereby commend and congratulate Leroy J. Poydras for his exceptional and exemplary
7 service as an educator and member of the United States Navy; does hereby express to him
8 enduring appreciation for his distinguished service to the citizens of Baton Rouge, the state
9 of Louisiana, and the United States of America; does hereby commend and congratulate him
10 upon the historic occasion of his ninety-eighth birthday and record for posterity the
11 extraordinary life he has lived since his birth; and does hereby extend to him best wishes for
12 continued success and happiness in all of his future endeavors.
13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
14 Leroy J. Poydras.
