A RESOLUTION
To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the
death of Dana Carpenter, PhD, the Director of Academic Outreach: Dual Enrollment,
Trio Programs, and COMPASS Testing at Southern University in
Baton Rouge, Louisiana since 2016.
WHEREAS, Dr. Carpenter served in several capacities since first coming to Southern
University in 1977, as an associate professor and coordinator of Oral Expression in the
Communication Skills Center, coming from a similar program at Kansas State University
in Manhattan, Kansas, where he taught from 1975; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Carpenter's experience in and dedication to the education of young
people took him from the Calcasieu Parish School system to the Southern University
Laboratory School in 1971, and then on to Kansas State University; and
WHEREAS, few have had a longer and more varied career in the teaching of students
and of prospective teachers than did Dana Carpenter, and he touched the lives of students
at every level; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Carpenter's first full professorship position at Southern University
began in 1986, when he was named Professor and Director of Counseling and Advisement,
Junior Division, and in this position Dr. Carpenter especially enjoyed planning and
implementing the freshman orientation program for fifteen hundred to two thousand students
at the beginning of each academic year; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Carpenter's tenure at Southern University, prior to his most recent
area of concentration, included Interim Associate Dean Vice Chancellor for Academic
Affairs in 2015, Dean of the University College from 2012 through 2014, Associate Vice
Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean of the University College from 2001 through
2013, Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management/University College from 2001
through 2008, and Professor and PK-16+ Teacher Quality Coordinator from 2001 through
2003; and
WHEREAS, Dana Carpenter was also active in the area of research, grant writing
and implementation of those grants, and his successful grant writing brought thousands of
dollars to Southern University and other institutions for whom his ability to garner research
dollars was a vital part of the operation of each institution of learning; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Carpenter was married to Barbara West Carpenter, PhD who is the
state representative for District Sixty-Three in East Baton Rouge Parish, and he leaves
behind a daughter and a son to mourn his passing; and
WHEREAS, the Carpenter family has established the "Dr. Dana Carpenter
Scholarship" for the City of Baker School System.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby express sincere condolences upon the death of Dr. Dana Carpenter of
Southern University.
