SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 71

A RESOLUTION
To commend Kate Walker of Cedar Creek High School on being named a state high school
honoree of the 2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.
WHEREAS, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program represents the
United States' largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service; and
WHEREAS, all public and private middle and high schools in the country, as well
as all Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs,
and affiliates of Points of Light's HandsOn Network, were eligible to select a student or
member for a local Prudential Spirit of Community Award; and
WHEREAS, this prestigious award, presented by Prudential Financial, Inc. in
partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honors young
volunteers across the country who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to
serving their communities; and
WHEREAS, the nationwide program, in its twenty-fourth year, recognizes young
people for outstanding, self-initiated community service; and
WHEREAS, Kate Walker of Ruston is a fifteen-year-old sophomore at Cedar Creek
High School who was named state high school honoree for raising more than $70,000 to find
a cure for a rare neuromuscular disease, Friedreich's ataxia, that makes it difficult for her to
walk, and employs different kinds of media to spread awareness and educate the public
about disabilities in general; and
WHEREAS, this extraordinary young woman exemplifies the spirit of community
that is so important to the future of our state and country; and
WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities,
and the overall vitality of American society depends, in great measure, upon the dedication
of young people like Kate Walker who use their compassion and considerable talent to assist
others.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend and congratulate Kate Walker on being chosen as a state high school
honoree of the 2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Award; does hereby recognize her
outstanding record of volunteer service, peer leadership, and community spirit; and does
hereby extend to her best wishes for continued success and happiness in her future
endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Kate Walker.
