STUDENT/SCH ATTENDANCE:  Provides for an excused absence to allow students to
vote
1	AN ACT
2To enact R.S. 17:226(C), relative to exemptions from compulsory school attendance; to
3 provide that students shall be temporarily excused from school to vote in certain
4 elections; and to provide for related matters.
5Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1.  R.S. 17:226(C) is hereby enacted to read as follows:
7 ยง226.  Exemptions from compulsory attendance

9	C.  Students who are registered to vote shall be excused from school for a
10 period of up to two hours, for the express purpose of voting, on days on which
11 congressional primary and general elections are held.  Each public school governing
12 authority shall adopt rules and regulations necessary for the implementation of this
13 Subsection.

Abstract:  Requires public schools to excuse students for up to two hours for the purpose
of voting during certain elections.
Present law generally requires parents of children between the ages of six and 18 to send
their children to school.  Relative to a child being temporarily excused from school, permits
temporary absences for certain circumstances.
Proposed law excuses students registered to vote from class for up to two hours for the
purpose of voting in congressional primary and general elections.  Requires public school
governing authorities to adopt rules for implementation of proposed law.
