TRANSPORTATION DEPT: Creates a divisible load permit for drivers hauling multiple
materials
1 AN ACT
2To amend and reenact R.S. 32:386(A) and 387(B), relative to divisible shipments; to provide
3 for the inclusion of divisible shipments in the total gross weight of any vehicle or
4 combination of vehicles; to provide for a special permit for shipments that are
5 divisible; and to provide for related matters.
6Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
7 Section 1. R.S. 32:386(A) and 387(B) are hereby amended and reenacted to read as
8follows:
9 §386. Weight
10 A. The total gross weight of any vehicle or combination of vehicles shall not
11 exceed eighty thousand pounds, which shall include shipments considered as
12 divisible that are readily divided, broken, or dismantled, and no vehicle or
13 combination of vehicles shall exceed its licensed gross weight.

17 B.(1) The secretary may issue a special permit for the operation of vehicles
18 or combination thereof having dimensions or weights in excess of the limits imposed
19 by R.S. 32:380 through 386 if the shipment is not , which shall include shipments
20 considered as divisible that are readily divided, broken, or dismantled and does not

1 exceed the weight limits in this Section, or and exclude the operation of such
2 vehicles is otherwise prohibited by law, however, if the parts which have been
3 divided, broken or dismantled from the shipment weight in the aggregate of five
4 hundred pounds, or less, then the shipment shall be considered as indivisible.
5 Provided further, however, that the secretary may issue special overwidth permits for
6 vehicles transporting pipe. In the exercise of his discretion, the secretary shall
7 consider the following factors, as well as any other circumstances existing in the
8 particular case:

Abstract: Includes divisible shipments in the total gross weight of any vehicle or
combination of vehicles and authorizes a special permit to include shipments that are
divisible.
Present law prohibits the total gross weight of a vehicle or combination of vehicles from
exceeding 80,000 lbs and a vehicle or combination of vehicles from exceeding its licensed
gross weight.
Proposed law modifies present law to include a divisible shipment in the total gross weight
of a vehicle or combination of vehicles.
Present law authorizes the secretary to issue a special permit for the operation of a vehicle
or combination of vehicles with a weight in excess of the limits imposed by present law and
prohibits a shipment that is divisible from receiving a special permit.
Proposed law modifies present law to authorize a special permit for a shipment that is
divisible.
